you guys wear gaiters? can any one recommend good waterproof ones?
trails around my house are always washed out I'm sick of always having wet boots

I wear gaiters to prevent scree from getting into my boots, but that's pretty much it. From what I've seen, they seem pretty ineffective at preventing water from getting in.

i don’t think gaiters are too useful for water, they are really for preventing snow getting in your boots. water will flow in the gap between them and your boot.

I've found gaiters are not good for navigating water or waterproofing. They can keep excess moisture off your boots and legs if you're in thick foliage that's soaked or ime hiking through patches of devil's club.

yeah i use them in Florida cause of the dew on the grass (and bugs). I wish mine where actually snake proof bc there are tons of huge ass snakes here, the gaiters do make you sweat. If i was wading through marsh i would buy those frog togg overshoe thing. It sounds gay but it does keep the sand out, i used it for the snow in Oregon recently and it worked i guess but i used it to keep in the heat.

I’ve worn the same pair of gaiters for a few years now, I’ve found them useful for certain kinds of terrain/climate. Some examples are:

>day hike in the Appalachians outside Brevard on a rainy and muddy day; kept the dew from the high grass and mud from getting into my boots or socks

>day hike loop where we passed from dry desert up to a snow capped peak and back down through a swamp before getting back to the trailhead and the dry climate; kept the moisture, cold, and ticks (of which I picked off several) out of my socks and pants

>multi day backpacking in the cascades when inclement weather was predicted; helped keep pants legs cleanish and dry, made tent life easier not having soaking pants and ticks to worry about each time I crawled in and out

Overall they’re worth it for me, they weigh next to nothing and have taken a beating thus (I would assume) extending the life of several pairs of pants I really like and don’t want to replace anytime soon

Gaitors make your legs sweat they are a freaking meme for kuiu boy wannabes and the like. The light weight ones with the only purpose of keep small pebbles from your shoes are acceptable. They also are a pain on and off and people will forgo re-tying their boots or changing socks because the gaiters are such a PITA and get blisters. If you are wearing boots and pants put a rubber band or shock cord around the hem of the pant. I went all winter snow shoeing in Alaska and didn’t use gaiters or boots higher than 7-8 inches

They aren't really waterproof but they are very good, I never hike without them. They will flood if you take more than one step submerged in water. Great for mud, hook grass, small streams, puddles, wet grass/bush, protection for scratches, bush getting in your boots and scree. I don't worry about wet feet.

Gaiters are great for hunting and bush bashing in tough New Zealand country. Most hunters use them. Protects from water and shit getting into the shoe, prevents wet plants from waterlogging the bottom section of pants, and protects from sharp plants like speargrass. Don't bother with cheap neoprene ones made in china, they cannot stand up to rugged conditions.

Most people on /out/ just walk on footpaths and don't need gaiters. Gaiters can only protect from deep puddles/streams if you go through QUICKLY. If you stand there in the water eventually the water will get in.

If I'm doing backcountry tramping in NZ, then yes, like most people in the backcountry here. They make a huge difference going though wet bush or mud or just general shitty conditions that exists here in abundance. Or if I'm doing mountaineering so I don't put a hole though my trousers with crampons or an axe. Also because my overtrousers are oversize to help with stretch while climbing, they keep everything tight against my legs which helps avoid snags in the first place.

Having said that I never used them before moving to NZ. It took me two overnight trips to see the light of big leather boots, shorts, leggings and gaiters.

They're totally unnecessary for dry or wide open paths.

I have a pair that I made from an old pair of jeans. I cut off the legs and added elastic material to the ends so that one side can go over my boots and the other around my calf. Then I sprayed them with waterproofing spray. I use them to keep plant seeds and scree out of my socks and boots. You can buy nicer ones, but I recommend this if you don't want to spend money.

Not true, Puttees are basically just cloth, you will have more versatility with that item then just gaitors.
Im not saying taht puttees are better im just saying that there is a real reason to take them over the other. Think of out gear like kitchen gadgets, if you have a kitchen gadget that only does 1 thing, you have one items that good for one thing but shit at everything else.
If you have an item taht can be used for a lot of things in the kitchen, you have a good useful item in your kitchen.

i use full shin OR gortex gaters in the winter. i snowmobile a lot in the winter for work so i cant yes 100% waterproof and long lasting. get the one with leather heelstraps if u can and snowproof them

the zippers broke right away so I used hockey tape to hold them on

That's effectively it, I see some shoes have an integrated sock gaiter for this but it's more limiting and annoying than it is effective. Get a shoe thats moth opening is designed to be as flush against the skin as possible. Far better option

Outdoor Research gaiters seem to be the standard. American's like all in one solutions usually because we are fat and lazy, so you see more wellies, boots, or tech pant recommendations. But think OR has a gore-tex version. Going to try Swazi's gaiters soon, since they make the best fleece around.

In the Finnish army during my conscription I marched in rubber boots for hundreds of kilometres. They are also the best legwear one could have during winter in the swampy forest, even the best gore tex combat boots give in at some point, meanwhile rubber boots give in never.
