Ok but do-able for a multi-day hike.
Problem is they're designed to constipate you, so all the fun of the weekend camping is lost when you have to spend an hour on the toilet at home in pain, screaming like you're giving birth.

You should do more research if you don't get good info here- MREs have methods to either facilitate using the bathroom that you need to be aware of before it pops up on you or preventing you from going until youre back home
I recommend testing one out in your backyard before you go on a trip, or making your own custom MRE
if space is limited in your pack, find out how to 'strip' your MRE

If you really want to go for MREs here's my advice. Don't field strip them since it's easy for all that shit to move around in your pack and you want the food on top for easy access plus you'll probably want that gum and coffee a few days in and you will loose a spoon because your a retard. If you really care about weight that much field strip them and put everything you want in a secure bag, loose the heaters because your not a bitch, and the cardboard. Yes they do constipate you but as long as your drinking enough water it isn't serious and the red gum is not a laxative it's fucking cinnamon. It's shitty food with a lot of calories so if your doing a camping trip fo yourself a favor and just get a jet boil, powered foods, and some dried meat. Maple sausage is the best mre though

I used them for one week long trip as a novice and didnt shit the whole week. would not recommend but larpers will cry foul bc you have to use military rations to be truly /out/side. Best option for backpacking is any of the freeze dried meals you can get at REI supplemented with jerky, snacks, tortilla + tuna/chicken packets for lunch. if you have a fisherman in your party you can bum olive oil to pad even more calories

buy coconut milk powder, potatoe powder, (baking)cocoa powder some vanilla sugar packets and marshmellows. for the price of one mre youll get 5 days of nutrients. Construct oven/advanced fireplace from stones where you are. Use Any water.

MREs are delicious and fun to make if you haven't before. Upside is a long shelf life and they don't lose taste too easily. Downsides are cost and size. You can bring more food with you for the same volume at a lower price per meal.
If you're looking for good options on items to bring (assuming you can make your own recipes):
>Raw oats and oatmeal packets
>Rice, pastas and packaged knorr sides
>Granola, raisins, nuts, trailmix, etc
>Dehydrated fruits and meat
>Beans
>Hard cheeses
>Tuna and chicken packets
>Sausage
>Protein bars
>Pocket eggs
>Peanut butter
>Cottage cheese (an anon in a thread 6 months back mentioned this as a viable option. Apparently it can last about 3 days after being opened. Haven't tried myself though.)
>Stripped MRE items
>Any sugars or spices you'd like
Don't forget a field guide to help you forage for berries and local edible fauna. Nothing will taste better than that.

I have used MRE`s and have liked them. For an overnight trip it is nice because you don't need to bring any cooking stuff. Also one advantage is you can buy them buy the case and if you do that the price is actually not bad. You can buy a case of them the have a check by date of next year for like 90 bucks. This means you get 12 meals that are about 1k calories for 90 bucks which is hard to beat. Some taste good some don`t.

Fair warning if they are anything like the real deal MREs they will back you up something fierce and you will fucking destroy your toilet after.

IMO you should go with MREs if you are lazy, and just want something you dont need to think about when packing or cooking.

As mentioned, mountain house is a cheaper option.

Standard rations probably not, field rations generally block you up so you're not needing to take a poo break during a fight.

In british ration packs, they have 2 types of biscuits. Biscuit Brown and Biscuit Fruit.
Brown constipates you if you eat it and Fruit is a laxative.
Obviously, you eat the brown at the start of your patrol or operation and eat Fruit at the end when you know you'll be near a toilet.

Sausages are easy to make on a fire, just need a stick. If you carry a pan you can make nice meals with some potatoes, meat, onions, vegetables etc. you can also fish or pick berries and mushrooms. Having some bread to go with everything is also nice. Snacks like chocolate to give some energy on long hikes.

TL;DR Just take some good food. You don't need to do any military lariping in the woods.

One of my favorite gun shops had cases for cheap enough that I didn't mind buying them from time to time. $35 for a case if you paid in cash. Haven't been there in years now, no idea if they still do this.
MREs aren't that good, but I think they're really fun. Little bit of everything inside, and you never really know what you're going to get (besides the main menu item obviously). Plus the novety of using the FRH and having a decent variety of stuff all tucked inside.

Does anyone here cook out while camping? I was looking at getting a mess kit for all my cooking needs. Ive had my eye on one of the german mess kits because of how versatile they look and it seems like you can store quite a lot in them when its not in use.

I take a single can of corned beef HASH(the little potato cubes are key to balance the flavor of the beef/pickling salt) for every morning of the trip and a handful of granola bars in case I don't find or catch anything else.
