Catfishing was crap last night bros. Weather was worse than expected and we got nothing except gobys. Gave up on the spot and we to another to try for Catfish and Carp- although there was lots of fish activity and feeding and a few nibbles, got no fish on. So nothing to show for several hours except a couple tiny invaders.

Going to try my Carp/Bullhead pond tomorrow morning if its not raining.

I've been doing pretty well on paddle tail swimbaits. I give them a good rip through the water, then let them drift down to the bottom. If I'm super shallow, I raise the rod tip and run it higher, and have had a lot of bass ambush from their hideout in the shallows. Nothing giant, but consistent.

technically they work for all species, but scaled down versions are specialty tackle and not always easy to find. Most standard LMB tackle you can use for pike fishing. For perch fishing you could use the smaller stuff like a ned rig. A lot of bass rigs rely on stuff like worm hooks and EWG hooks which they don't make in small sizes and you would have to improvise or DIY.

Another thing to mention with bass is that they have big fucking mouths compared to their body size. A 4lb bass and a 30 inch pike will hit the same size lures. The big fucking jigs and worms that a largemouth will just engulf in one gulp won't be handled as well by other species.

This was 5.5/6lbs and I caught it while targeting 30+ pound catfish.

so ill get it in high vis color then. the thing with leader to me is right now i have wire leaders and im mainly fishing pike. however to make certain rigs like dropshots and texas rigs with bullet weight, i either have to crimp my wires on the spot, or use fluoro leader instead, which is like 16 euro for 30 meters of 0.7 meter. not very cheap. and i dont know if i can just do 1 feet of fluoro leader or need to do more

Depends on what you're targeting but Ugly Stick always had decent quality and fairly cheap ultra light to medium rods

When talked about on YouTube, they are centered around bass fishing... but most of those methods work for other species too individually. I bass fish and only use a couple of those because people get too autistic with bass fishing, and it has become almost a cringey "this is how you do it on this day" type of approach that I just can't follow.

People suggest a 6ft or so leader... but I run a barrel swivel connection and only use a 6inch leader, and I've caught plenty of fish that way. not ideal, but the fish don't seem to care. I hate tying line to line knots.

I catch dinks that size all the time on fake bugs. There is this spot below a dam where the water is only about 2 feet deep for the length of a couple football fields, and all the largemouth down there seem to be this size. I guess they wash down the dam or something, then get eaten by birds before they can get big.

It's because people get too caught up in the internet and they think that they can learn to fish from watching videos or reading something when in reality you only get a base level of knowledge from listening to others, the vast majority of a good fisherman's knowledge comes from him doing things himself.

This applies to pretty much every skill but doubly applies for fishing because there's so much nuance in how fish act based on the waterway, time, season, etc that it's basically impossible to say something like "x lure will catch bass". There are waterways a few miles from each other that have completely different species and the similar species will refuse to bite the other's lures

tl;dr you can only get a surface level knowledge base from listening to others, the only way to be good at fishing is to do/learn things yourself

The reel alone is $60 and I might not use it again for 5 years. I think I might just go for the Daiwa combo and if I end up surf fishing more often maybe get something better. Are there any semi-ok reels in the $30 range?

I've never used that daiwa combo, but the reel looks like something they just throw in to call it a combo, who knows if it lasts. I'd rather spend $20 and buy once something I can pull out and use later down the road if I want to. Yeah, you're probably right. I was thinking I could get away with something super cheap since I only plan to use it for a couple days. I guess if I get something decent I could use it for steelhead too. I mostly fish trout in high mountain lakes so all my quality gear is light.

I personally don't keep them that large because I've heard that the meat isn't that great and the amount of heavy metals. When I do keep fish, it's generally above the limit and up to 10-14 lbs. We released both of those fish. The 49 lb one took quite a bit to revive him, but he eventually swam off.

Go in the early morning (key) and fish in shallow cover like lilypads, docks, or shallow weeds. Make sure to mix a long pause into your retrieve, sometimes they will just sit and stare for 15+ seconds before they hit.

Oh, ok that makes sense. I'm not trying to show off, just grew up with cheap spinners that always tangled. Dad used to pull trout from the water via fly while I cursed to myself, creating bigger knots... I wont be fishing for bass (they don't live in Newfoundland), just trout.

Maybe doooown the road I'll pick up fishing for Char or Salmon. But for now, trout is king on my fishing preference.

Basically after $300 a fly rod doesnt get much better you're just getting a status symbol. The fish dont care how much your rod costs. If I had a grand for just rods/reels/lines burning a hole in my pocket and I was looking past entry level I'd get something like an echo river glass in 2 or 3 weight, and something in the way of a 9 foot 6 weight with a medium fast action. I think an echo ion xl would serve the purpose well. Add a redington behemoth to the 6 weight and an orvis battenkill to the 2 or 3 weight, and an airflo line to both. The 6 weight you'll want the general purpose line, and for the glass rod you'll probably be happiest with a double taper line. I like to cut double tapers in half for small stuff because that gives me two 50 foot lines and a 50 foot cast on a 2 or 3 weight is tricky to say the least and in water small enough to justify it you're seldom casting over 20 feet. Ypu want a floating line for both, and you might pick up a super fast sink poly leader for the 6 weight. If you're going to be targeting fish in the sub-14-inch range, you'll want the 2 or 3 weight, and if you expect to catch 10 inch fish and up the 6 weight will be great. The reason I reccomend a 6 weight is it will give better access to streamer fishing, and more back bone if you hook in to a trophy brown trout on that streamer. The extra weight in the line also makes casting nymph rigs with bead heads and split shot easier.

I use some of that plus dropshot (usually paddle tail swim bates or berkly GULP minnows/leeches) for walleye sometimes. My favorite walleye hole is full of huge jagged boulders. If I used regular jig heads I would break off every other cast. I've also caught crappie and perch on carolina rigs.

I've done these little mini spinners that have a clip so one can easily swap the trailer. It's also got micro swivels so you can tie directly to it. I mostly tie flies but a fair portion can be scaled for spinning gear like that balanced bugger thing I posted in the last thread. I can absolutely do spinny things and more jig hook wooly buggers. I could also do ice dub fuzzle buggers.

This stuff rocks, keeps my soft baits basically going indefinitely. Another trick you can do is taking a butter knife and a blow torch, GENTLY HEATING IT UP, and slowly inserting it into cuts and and it'll melt back together. The only person allowed to tough my carbon steel knives is my brother because no one else will listen when I tell them carbon steel needs special treatment. My fillet knife is covered in patina spots from my dad using it on tomatoes and leaving it out with tomato juice on it or after throwing it in the sink.

Honestly newfie anon if the brook trout get as big as Ontario/Northern Quebec strains do then I would go for a 7wt or 8wt, 9ft rod. This will let you target char, salmon, lake trout in the spring, northern pike in addition to trout. Sage Sonic or Maverick are really good all purpose rods same with the less expensive TFO Axiom 2 and 2x. If you want a rod only for brookies and browns and they don't get very big then go for a 6wt of the models I recommended. This will let you fish dries, nymphs and smaller streamers effectively.

Tidepool sculpin? I have the old broken tip of a trout rod with a few feet of 2lb mono, some splitshot and a size 14 hook that I use to fish the tidepools. I just bust open a mussel for bait and use tweezers to bait the hook.

i fell for the bait runner on a spinning rod meme 3 times before i learned my lesson, it's just one more thing to break, and it doesn't make near enough noise to do what its supposed to do. that said, bait runners on conventional and memecasting reels are very much not a meme. I'm not sure how much smaller you're actually wanting to go, but I have a Daiwa sealine x40sha with a couple hundred yards of #30 mono and can cast 2 ounces on it with no issues with the right rod. i'd probably drop down to the x30sha if i was gonna buy it again. if you're planning to do mostly lures, however. get a spinning reel with no bait runner.

exactly. as for casting and conventional reels, they actually out cast spinning reels (look at the surf casting competitions, they all use conventional reels) they do have a bit of nuance though. first, when the bait hits the water you have to stop the spool spinning with your thumb. if you do it wrong, you could backlash, or worse, burn your thumb. then if you have a leader, you have to make sure that knot is off to the side of the spool, I've seen people tear their thumbs open on a leader knot doing a hard cast with the knot in the center of the spool. conventional reels suck for lures if you're not trolling though, so if you mostly intend to use bait they're fine, but if you're trying to run lures doing the level wind and trying to impart action can be tricky. not impossible, but tricky.

A bait runner seems more convenient though. Even with circle hooks, I've gut hooked a few catfish fumbling around with the drag trying to tighten it down enough to drive the hook. I'd imagine just flipping a fucking switch at the back of the reel would be easier.

It sounds like what you are actually looking for is a bait feeder reel, and not a bait runner. Okuma makes a few bait feeders. Look into the avenger. I have several, for as small as panfish all the way up to several hundred pound fish. They're quite nice. They're basically spinning rods with a little switch that has its own drag setting, and allows you to keep a bait or lure tight, but allows bigger fish to run freely with aforementioned bait or lure. I prefer spinning rods as well, but mainly because of how simple they are to keep running smoothly, especially while out on the water or in a pinch.

Finally going to incorporate fishing into my /out/ experience, going to camp by a river which apparently has a very healthy trout population. I've done a load of reading and assembled a kit. Still have to get some spinner lures which I'm going to get from a shop on the way to the camp site (I'll just ask them what they like, get a handful of different options.)
Here's what I've got:

7 foot ultralight rod rated for 6 - 12 pounds
Lightweight reel with a maximum drag of 8kg
10lb braided line for the main line, along with some 10lb fluorocarbon line for the leader
A handful of different spinner baits once I go to the store as mentioned earlier
Filleting knife

Am I missing anything? Super excited to catch my first trout. Thanks guys

It's not stocked artificially but I've heard there's lots of brown trout, not sure how to be more specific. I think I'll just stick with the spinners as I'm a beginner and don't want to overwhelm myself. Out of interest which areas are challenging to fish with spinners? Rocky, turbulent and fastmoving stretches can be a bit tricky. Shore conditions might impede your ability to swing freely and aim for the good spots (might not be an issue in your area). fishing a fly in the drift circumvents most of these issues. That said you can fish pretty much everything with spinners as well, just needs a bit more of trial and error.

Way too large, I don't even run a trailer on my spinnerbaits. Those trailers are more for chatterbaits or swim jigs. If people run trailers, they usually use a really skinny one like a regular keitech, not the fat impact.

Trying to get some basic ass kit together because my gf's sister decided she likes to fish and wants to go out with the three of us. How much am I going to fuck up if I order this? For pliers, buy some forcep style ones since they fit in the smaller mouths of panfish too. Eagle Claw makes some, and they sell others at Dicks and Bass Pro/Cabelas. For lures, I suggest any of the "Uncle Buck's Panfish" series Bass Pro sells. Just type that in the search bar. Also, Johnson beetle spin sold at walmart. Then, some Gamakatsu Crappie hooks in size 8. all of the things I listed are even cheaper than the stuff you listed, and the stuff in those kits you see have a lot of stuff you will NEVER use.

Forceps are nice for panfish when they swallow the hook, but I prefer a set of needle nose pliers like pic related for most purposes. The cutter is really handy for line, they have a little flat section in front of the cutter that works great for squishing down barbs which is nice for panfish fishing, and the more robust construction helps for using splitshots and for larger fish. You can get one for like 4-10 bucks at any hardware store or Walmart. No reason not have one of each.

Alongside what the other guy said, try marabou jigs like beetle bou jigs. 1/32 oz and 1/16 oz. In my experience they are extremely effective for most species, just a little light for a lot of fishing. I have even caught loads of lake trout on them by just throwing some split shots over one and jigging in 60 FoW. You should also have bass there which are always fun to target. Weedless jigs, texas rigs, and topwaters are good places to start for those.

Trout. In some tailraces, midges are the primary forage for trout so you have to size down to flies even smaller than that, and tailrace trout are normally the largest trout around. People fishing with shit smaller than a grain of rice for 10lb+ trout.

Matt, you should know how to surf fish by now.

But since you're asking rather politely; you should get an 11 foot rod with 5000 series reel at the very least. Your weight should be a 4oz pyramid weight at the smallest, but really should be any of the sand specialized weight going to about 8 oz. Mullet works fine, but cut mullet tends to tear up in the surf. Try salting them for a day to toughen them up a bit. Same with any dead bait.

I don’t get the “threatened” population bit either. There’s no way to know this other than the anecdotal evidence of “my buddy caught a bunch from the docks at night last year but not so much this year!!!” Maybe they are declining, maybe they are just hanging out in open water more, who tf knows.

they are apparently tasty, so some are in favor of catching and keeping a bunch, then others claim that is bad for the population, the rebuttal is that since they're not native what does it matter, others claim that release is pointless because they are "fragile" (just anecdotal evidence, again)
on top of all that they are somewhat nomadic and notoriously difficult to catch in the same spot consistently relative to other bay species (more experienced anglers may disagree).

in my personal experience, they fight hard and can grow pretty big and are a blast to locate and catch on light tackle.

The only conditions where there is consistent decent fishing them during the day is heavy wind and big waves along windswept rocky shores, which is no good for kayaking obviously. If you must fish during the day, fish deeper water near cover with slow trolled live bait rigs with a bottom bouncer. Any kind of bad weather is a good thing, especially approaching fronts. Your best bet is to get rigged up for nightfishing if you can. Make sure to look up your state's laws for lighting at bare minimum. Get out in the evening and troll crankbaits (I like floating rapalas, with weight added in front if needed) as close to the bottom as you can over rocks or along weedlines preferably around points near deep water. Fishing normally peaks right as it starts to get too dark to see well. Troll pretty fast, and occasionally pick up your rod and give it a pull then give it slack or use the kayak to sweep the rod then drop it back, you get hit a lot right after doing that. You can also still use a live bait rig, but it's nice not bothering with bait and you do not have to deal with bait robbers like perch or rockbass with lures. You can do that all the way into the night, they will normally bite all the way until morning. They normally move shallower as it gets darker, so keep that in mind. Sometimes they move into extremely shallow flats at night, where I bet a kayak could be really useful for the stealth factor. They are very boat shy when in shallower water, so try to let out as much line as you can manage.

This is based off my experience in ND and MN fishing from a motorized boat. Might not fully apply to where you live or from a kayak.

I have Daiwa Saltist 4500 5:7:1 that I plan on using it for surfcasting and some offshore fishing. I hope I bought a good one, I cant seem to find many 4500s now so I assume they have been discontinued.
Anyway.. What are some good quality rods and rings that I can equip this with for my two usages.

Mainly only interested in catching stripers and some flounder (I recognize that this is overkill for flounders), but if there are other tasty fish in the NY/NJ area I can fish for Id consider it.

Yes, but seat right on the board and crate further back. Being up that high sucks for keeping the nose of the board to the fish, and balance can get sketchy fighting sideways. I guess if it's 12 feet or better and wide it would be fine. I personally have to stick with a 10 footer because I need to have a hard board most times, and it fits inside my car. I have a 10 foot kayak as well. It's a real bitch to keep that one well balanced. I have stood on it, but it wants to tip easily. I could probably build outriggers, but that is more stuff to transport. It fits in the car though. I maintain a delicate balance in weight and length as well as collapsibility/transportability. I know it is weird to have such specific criteria, but I have found it works best for me and what I do personally. Everyone is different of course. I also have an inflatable, but that's reserved for hikes to ponds or lakes that are more than a mile or two away, or I places I am not able get the hard board to.

If you want to go the salt water fly fishing route nervous water will key you in. But I would stick with a spinning reel first.
