>>216929I find if you are in an area where mosquitoes are bad, they don't give a fuck about repellant. Even if you go and buy one of those ultra high DEET formulas that cause visible cancerous growths as you apply it. The definite best way of staving them off is to use some sort of 3rd party repellant. The little burnable coils you can buy are cheap and work ok, but can falter if you are in a really bad area., you might need to burn 2-3 to get effect.
The only sure fire product I've ever used is a thermacell. they work ridiculously well. it can be a little pricey. a pack of butane and tabs that will burn for 48 hours straight will set you back around 20$ and the device itself is around $40. but there will be zero mosquitoes around you I guarantee it. Plus you only need to run it while you are exposed in the evenings., turn it off when you climb into your tent and you are golden since it will still give off repellant for a good 15 mins and ensure you tent interior is mosquito free. a pack of refills will easily last even a long duration outdoors. I've camped right next to stagnant waters, gotten raped up the ass with bugs, fired up the thermacell and they vanish, I didn't realise how bad the bugs were until the butane ran out and it stopped working and the bugs SWARMED in and fucking destroyed me while I recharged it,
Can't really help you for daytime while you are moving about though, DEET is your best bet or you could try get that special stuff I forget the name of you can dip your clothing in. Also just starting a small fire can do wonders to stave off insects, especially if you get it really smokey.
