560 something well-maintained DoC huts in their fantastic Hut system that only costs $50 a year to stay in as much as you like.
Tramping trails fucking everywhere, ranging from the world famous Great Walks, Routeburn Track, Milford Track and the Te Araroa, down to hardly-used 10-day tracks that disappear into the wilds that maybe 3 people a year visit.
Birdfags and Botanyfags have a field day too cuz of all the native species.
Camping laws are pretty lax compared to other countries too, just check fire conditions before lighting a campfire.
