They act similarly to charcoal in that they will absorb nutrients from the soil (specially nitrogen) and leave the surrounding soil poorer. eventually they will rot away and re-release what they've absorbed, but that can take up to 3-4 years. They should be placed on long-term compost piles (the kind you compost dangerous things such as grease or human feces), never direct on the soil, let alone in the soil which you plan to use next year.
