I used to go through there all the time, it's a really nice path. The last time I was in the area it looked like they were doing serious construction on some of the power lines and I haven't been there since, but when I lived there I walked along the power lines from Cougar Field to the Great Swamp every day

How did you prepare them? I captured a meals worth. Sauteed them in butter and garlic. They weren't bad. I agree they are crispy and nutty. It's totally worth a meal once every 17 years.

I've seen that a bunch too. I think it's because they clear out trees to make room for powerlines, a swamp gets created, and then the nearby trees drown. Remember that New Jersey is pretty low lying so ground water is right below your feet.
Something similar happened in Australia when they cut down trees in a valley and it formed a lake.

I drove all the way to Lancaster county PA last year to get some (3 hours from me) and I'd like to get some closer to home.

They grow in the sourlands, in your toxic waste dump of a state containment zone.
They also grow in Timber Creek Park in Camden, and Mercer County park new princeton.
