Alright anons the last one had pretty good turn out so I’m going to keep this going. This thread is dedicated to helping noobs attain hunters safety, licensing, land access, general knowledge, and mentorship. Remember the more licenses we sell the more land access we all get.

This is a course that can be taken predominantly online in your free time. They will generally have a field day you can schedule to attend. This course is valid in all 50 states and never expires.

>Permits and tags
This may not be required depending on local laws and target species but typically applies towards all big game species and things like migratory birds that are federally regulated and accessing specific Wildlife Management Areas that have limited entry. This is very specific and sometimes requires lotteries that in extreme cases take a lifetime to acquire so if you ever plan on applying for specific rare hunts you may want to start building preference points now.

Pretty much every state has public land atlases and GPS applications are typically available.

Most versatile starter gun is a 12 gauge shotgun. You can take everything from rabbits and upland birds to big game with this. A Remington 870 can be had for about $300-$400. Intermediate do it all rifles for big game at longer range in something such as .270, 6.5 Creedmore, 7mm Rem Mag, 30-06, and .308 can be had easily in the $400-$800 range with scope.

I have no intentions of hunting anytime soon but i'm wondering what is acceptable for hunting turkey. is an 18.5 inch 590 cylinder bore (no chokes) serviceable or do I need to buy another shotgun? what about a .50 cal flintlock (difficulty notwithstanding)?

GS archery elk hunt is soon approaching. This will be my first year hunting. I've been scouting the last month and half and will continue to scout the next 4 weekends before opening day.

Turkey hunting ain’t rocket science and pretty much any shotgun spread is “serviceable.” If you want to improve your odds you can invest in a choke that will keep your grouping tight but I took my one an only bird with a 20 gauge with leftover steel shot from teal season when I was 11. Your equipment will serve you as well as you invest in it.

Dude it’s a pump action starter gun for noobs on a budget. Mossy 500 is just as good and cheap. Both are perfectly fine first shotguns. I recommend the 870 because I like where the safety is better. They can piss their money away on an A5 or a Ridgeback with all the trimmings later.

a cylinder bore physically cannot take a choke which is why I asked but ty for the reply. I've shot skeet with it before but as youd imagine you either have to be quick to get the clay up close or just lucky accurate. its a tac shotgun so w/e I was just wondering if it was worth considering a different gun
