I'm convinced that the whole cairn meme is perpetuated solely by suburbanites that don't actually go outside. The only time I've seen cairns was at a KOA on the way to Yellowstone. Don't get me wrong; I've seen people set rocks on other rocks out in the Sierras, but I've never seen a full blown cairn outside of the KOA. I'm absolutely convinced that it's a larp.

I normally only see them near streams/creeks and even then, rarely. But this weekend I saw a bunch clumped together at the very end of a hiking trail on a lakeshore.

I can kinda get that its sorta fun to do? But why do people feel the need to leave a mark at every campsite? Same thing with people who carve their names into trees and shit.

I saw fucking dozens the other day on a medium hike. Most were marking routes, only a few in places where you actually needed it. People tend to build more around them too if they are useful.

I got yelled at for knocking them over while backpacking in the white mountains because 'you need them to find the trail' or some bullshit, but then I got above the treeline and the fog rolled in and theres no trail, just boulder field and there are huge ones, like 10 ft tall, about 100 ft apart for miles on end and they probably saved my life, so idk I'll probably still knock the little ones over indicating stream crossings and stuff. Also came to a spot where someone definitely made some down a stream bed just to fuck with people so I knocked those over too.
