Make sure you have an empty memory card and a full battery or 2.
Not a massive DSLR and lenses, that would jus be a bastard to lug around there. Something like Sony RX100 or Panasonic TZ110 (called something different in US but see pic/link). You can control and view thru your phone too so carry a tripod for a group photo.
I have one of these and use it as my daily because my other one is many thousands of dollars worth, is big and heavy. The wee ones take legit great pics, and if you don’t have one, people will probably lend it to you. Ask them about Aperture Priority and have a play before you go.
SHOOT JPEG + RAW. I won’t go into that too much but you can later adjust literally everything but focus and shutter speed or someone can do it for you. Hell, drop box that shit and I’ll do it.
I’m in NZ so gear may vary a bit for contingencies but I’d have:
First aid kit
1 sleeping bag between 2 people minimum in case someone breaks a leg
Water
A couple of packs of muesli bars, biltong etc, enough to last until mid day tomorrow (broken leg)
Some cash for ???
An asthma inhaler for OTHER people, they’re the worst for not carrying meds because “hasn’t happened for ages”, then go exert themselves and fall over. 2days of any meds you might need.
All the other usual shit. Make sure your boots n pack are comfy now, don’t start with brand new stuff.
