>>2184843If you do have a GS500 I'd look for these specific things, first make sure you've got oil. GS500s can burn oil.
Second, if you notice something leaking or dripping around the shift, don't worry about it. The chain flings everything into the sprocket cover, which has a gap and liquid often drips/leaks from there. It's not a leak from the engine itself.
Third, if you do notice a leak, don't worry about it UNLESS it's dripping. GS500s, well, most aircooled bikes leak oil in one way or another. Just make sure it isn't really dripping or anything.
Fourth, the little marks on the swingarms that you're supposed to use to align the chain are pointless. Using a tool is best, but I usually just measure the part of the screw sticking out the back and make sure they're even. You can also measure from the rear wheel's axle bolt to the bolt on the frame by where your foot usually stay, on both sides and make sure the distance is even.
Oh yeah, on measuring, bring one of those little tape measures that rolls up. Helps with some stuff.
Remeber you can bump start the bike if the battery dies. Learn how to bump start a bike, if you don't know.
Reset your trip at each fill up
Make sure your header bolts are tight. They often vibrate loose.
Add an inline fuel filter as the gs500 doesn't come with one. Just a little clear one.
if your bike is from my year or similar take the seat off, see those little tab things on each side? That's where you can put the D-ring of your helmet, then put the seat back on, that's a helmet lock. You can also tuck your gloves under the seat then lock it.
You can get "sheepskin" seat covers. I don't have one, but I think they'd be very good. Many people sweat by them.
Remember your rear brake on gravel/offroad.
Here's a cool thing:
