Seriously though, I have an apple tree in my garden, pic related.

It was there when I moved in and I can claim no credit for its growth.
Are these things safe to eat as is? Can I basically just give them a wash and get stuck in?

there are loads of them and the tree is like 9ft tall
quite a few have fallen off on their own and mostly are small ones so I just chucked them in the bin

if they're safe to eat, what's the sign for when I can harvest/pull them off?

Lol! Thanks for the thread, anon. My boomer dad and his boomer friend have completely ruined our family cabin lands by trying to "fix it up". I'm so devastated by what they did... everything I've considered sacred there is pretty much cut down or thrown out (including our rock firepit we made in the mid 90s... they actually threw out the rocks!?".

Anyways... I'm actually thinking about planting some apple trees around the cabin itself. Not sure if I should just root large cuttings of wild apples I see... or buy cultivars (but then I'm fucking around with various dwarf rootstocks"... thoughts anons??

I'm new to this shit and admit I know bugger all about gardening.
People on here weren't very interested when I was asking about laying turf either.
I have a few little trugs though which I will try to grow some herbs in at some point though.
I'll have no idea what I'm doing in the beginning with that, either.

Anon, it's just insane... the reason for the grounds being tore up and chopped down was to put in a well... which then they decided couldn't go there... oops! So they then proceeded to do the same elsewhere... turned out to be a horrible placement, BUT it's in...oops! Since we now fuckes up the land, everything is flooding! Better lay down a bunch of crushed stone because it's the opposite of aesthetic.
The rock firepit's inner drum was rusted out so instead of just getting a new drum, they threw out the old and (what I learned just then) bulldozed the rocks into the brook... which then fucked up the brook. Wow.

So here I am, wondering about apple trees. Thanks OP for making this thread so I could rant... now let's talk more about trees!!

If those are really apples, you can eat them just like that. You don't even need to wash them.
If they're hard and sour even once they're ripe, they'll taste much better after being stored for a few months in a cold a dark room (storage apples), while if they're sweet and juicy, you should use them immediately instead of keeping them (table apples). (Simplified - there's also baking apples and cider apples, but nobody in their right mind would plant just a single tree of those)

However, given how rough the skin looks in the pic, they might be quinces rather than apples. If that roughness is fluff, they are. Quinces can be eaten raw too, but taste bad. They're much better when boiled or baked.

I would love to add wild blueberry and lingonberry around the land (it grows up there naturally in fields etc).
Adding some apples would be a fun addition. Do apples do ok in acidic soils?

Yeah I'd heard of "cooking apples" which apparently taste bad. I had no way of figuring out which is which just by looking. Will probably give one a cheeky taste test some time this weekend and report back.

I was born in a city but have recently gtfo'd because I am escaping the modern Babylon hellscape. Although I know bugger all about rural shit. But I made a lawn grow fairly well recently which felt like a big achievement for me and now I'm going to learn about my apple tree.
Next adventure will be growing stuff, probably herbs, in some tray things I have. I accept occasionally getting dabbed on as part of the learning process.

Buy organic fruit and throw the seeds into a pot near a window and water it occasionally. Stuff just grows, it's not hard.

I've got a lemon tree starting and a tomato plant and some mystery plant that must've been something that fell off the kitchen counter, I'll find out what it is eventually.

I'd say go for some semi-dwarf cultivars. They're easier to harvest but don't look as dinky and weird as dwarf stock. They produce a bit more and should taste pretty good too.

Those are different things.
Quinces have fluffy "fur" on them, and are shaped a little different from apples, as they start with an inverse egg shape rather than an oval shape, and often stay thinner at the bottom even when ripe. Their flesh is so hard that it'll split like wood when cut.
They're also always yellow or green, never turning reddish like apples do.

Cooking apples (or baking apples, as they're more often called where I'm from) look exactly like apples. The only difference is that they don't reduce to jam when heated, but keep their shape. Most of these apples have uncomfortably hard flesh when raw, and many are sour. But that's not the case for all of them.
