Wildfires are really starting to piss me the fuck off. So far 3 of my favorite campsites in 3 different places have burned up. The smoky air is awful too.

Have you guys been affected by this year's fire season?

I live in Washington D.C. and the views from a lot of hikes have been temporarily RUINED because the haze from the wildfires has spread here and cast a pall over the mountains.

So, it isn't just west coasties affected!

we've had a pretty wet spring/summer where i am in the rocky mnts, so no fires here yet, but we're smoked out for sure. last summer there were multiple fires within a mile of my house so that was fucking scary. fuck wildfires.

blame the heavily-paid fire response for taking their time and letting it get worse to get paid more. not the smokejumpers risking their lives, but the ones in charge
spent last summer in several fire camps, and it's pretty bad- basically just embezzlement. The stuff people get, sometimes for no real reason, at taxpayer expense is ridiculous. they pay 100k for a dozen conservation corps kids to be there for 2 weeks. they get about 1-1.2k each, the supervisor about 6-8k- the rest goes to the office. That's fantastic profit, and that's just for the 'outsider help'
it's a fucking scam. pisses me off that my house and land is likely to burn just because its not a priority to put out

I'm in the northeast and we had two days last week where air quality warnings were issued due to the wildfires out west. It was super hazy and you could smell smoke everywhere you went.

On another note: I've heard it said that a lot of these fires out west are being caused by a lack of proper forestry and fire prevention due to government policy. Thoughts?

Fire suppression over the last century primed forests to be tinder boxes, and extreme drought and heat (read: climate change) has pushed us over the edge. Forests need to be burned and thinned more often.

of course not. controlled burns have been put off because a) it's more expensive than fire suppression, b) complaints from locals, c) it's a liability that can be avoided, d) it's a tough sell
in the long term there's a net gain from doing controlled burns but in the short term it's a lot cheaper to ban camp fires. you're gong to hear from anyone downwind of a controlled burn and they're not going to be happy. despite best efforts controlled burns turn into uncontrolled burns and people have lost their homes and lives. add ignorance on top of that and it's a tough sell
it's not the fault of climate change activists. in the US from the late 1800s to i think the mid 90s the procedure was to fight all fires (i just checked and it was 1905 when forest fires fell under the control of the forestry services and 1935 when it became policy to fight all fires. that carried on until 1995 when they changed the policy to assess whether they should let it burn and then reassessed in 2001 where they confirmed that was the way to handle it.)

All of this is right but one thing to add on is picking which areas get burned. A lot of people are coming around to the idea that we need to be doing controlled burns in more places more frequently but no one wants it done in their forest, always someone else's. Especially for people that have vacation homes in these areas or people trying to flip real estate the sight of a charred forest is unappealing cosmetically and for home values. This means that the more remote places are the ones getting burned and the problem of fuel accumulation near populated areas still goes unsolved

Relax, forest fires are natural and the only reason they are so bad lately is because terrible forest management by state and federal governments has led to excess fuel buildup.

I'm interested in this. Do you have a source? It is my understanding that comprehensive records were not kept until a few decades ago, and that the forest management strategy for the past century, until very recently, has been to immediately suppress all fires no matter where or how small.

BS. That plays a role in large coniferous forests but is not the only story there...moreover, it plays no role in coastal woodlands and scrub lands that are not your typical logged "forest".

It also has to due to a changing climate leading to much less moisture in the fuels. Shorter rain season, hotter, drier, longer dry seasons, anomolous wind events creating extreme fire behavior....its a myriad of factors well beyond simply poltardation memes.
