How feasible is train hopping and hitch hiking nowadays? Will I die or get beat by rail police if I do it?

I’m finishing up work right now and I’ve got some time before classes start up again. Me and a friend are planning on grabbing our hiking gear, instruments, and just stalking a rail yard. Has anyone does this, and how the hell do you get into it? We’ve got maps, some radios to listen to what trains are coming in, and my friend is reading into it, but I don’t want to get dismembered by some massive hunk of steel or get my shit kicked in by some rail cop.

bear in mind that its way harder now since all the yards are packed with cameras and bulls, but still doable if you arent a smothering idiot.
hitchhiking is the same as its always been tho a bit harder since covid.

the bulls wont beat you up that was always a meme from back to scare kids into not trying to ride the rails. most of them are decent and will just tell you to fuck off but every so often you'll get a cunt one that will hand you straight to the police/fine you if caught

go with an experienced rider. never try it without one, ive known too many kids that thought it was easy and died on their first time.

i just want to put my thoughts forward, yes riding the rails can be fun, its free travel and you see some great sights you wouldnt see otherwise.
but.. it gets glorified too much, anyone that has actually done it long term will you tell you, its miserable, they dont tell you about the 2day to sometimes a week waits for a train in the middle of fucking nowhere, to then be stuck on a train for 2 days straight hoping you have enough water.
not to mention the hearing loss if you didn't bring earbuds and the fact you will be absolutely filthy by the end of it so as soon as you roll into town everyone knows you are either homeless or are just a scruffy cunt

The only thing is where do we find someone to help us learn? Train hopping isn’t incredibly common, especially nowadays. We figured we’d start small with a local train and get used to it before doing anything “major”

Now that I'm back in a town that has rail lines going through it I might try, unfortunately it doesn't seem like the trains stop that much.
I'm also looking for a ~45 liter pack for this.
My ~30 liters is too small and a 60L would suck to run and jump with.

You know what is a bitch? Finding a pack that isn't lime green or florescent red.

I think train hopping is a bit of a meme I've done it twice now and it takes longer waiting for a train and hoping it goes in the right direction then it is to walk most of the time, at least in Europe you can spend days waiting for a good train. And the entire time you are on the train you wish you wasn't is so loud and uncomfortable.

I did some usual Car hitchiking. Works just fine. thumbs out, as long as you look normal theyll pick you up(it also depends on the countries though). I actually think my blond hair make it usually easier(dont wanna sound racist or some shit) but people seem to have a better attitude towards Blonde people, especially in eastern europe. Downside is travelling in certain 3rdworldcountries or poor countries usually is like a sign hanging on you that you are from europe and you beeing wealthy. Thats where you'd not blend in properly and are more likely to be a target of pickpockets etc.
