are you guys carrying radios on your hikes? during the last trip felt like a radio would've made the evenings much cozier
I remember seeing a youtube channel reviewing outdoor radios for hiking but that was years ago and a lot has probably changed since then

can you recommend any radios suitable for taking them on a trip?

Baofeng UV-5R is an affordable FM transceiver with replaceable batteries. I use it to listen to park ranger chatter or the local FM stations. Gets really good range too even in heavy tree cover.

Eton FR250, or something similar to it. I've had this kind of radio for about 16 years and it still works great. Has a siren and flashing lights, too, besides the FM/AM/shortwave and hand crack capabilities. Newer models probably can charge your phone.

If I know I won’t have cell signal, I usually take my UV5R and program a few of the local ARES/RACES repeaters in case of emergency since I don’t have one of those SOS beacons

radios are faggotry for everything but the most extreme out. enjoy having something 5x the size and 1/10th as useful as a cell phone. a cell phone is superior to a radio in every way until you get into HAM units that weight 50 pounds and are vehicle mounted with a dedicated power supply. at that level you can you can talk to people where a phone wont work.

I haven't used that particular radio but I've used some with hand cranks and you have to turn them for a while to get enough of a charge to listen to the radio for a few minutes. You'll never charge anything with it unless it is a literal emergency and even then it's going to take forever just to get a tiny charge
