How many tent stakes?

With regard to a freestanding tent; how many stakes does /out/ typically use? Do you always stake out the guylines, or only if it's windy? Do you find them necessary to tension the outer tent to prevent condensation?

you don't need them but they help keep the sides from slouching down and causing condensation to drip on you inside

here is a time I didn't have any stakes at all so I had to make some with a knife the night before
only had enough time/effort to do the main support ones not the outer guylines
we did get a little condensation on our elbows but it wasnt so bad
but not having that is preferrable
it also gives you more room if the guylines are all out because it goes from a triangle tent to technically a pentagon

I haven't owned a free-standing tent since I started shaving my balls, fool. They're for kids.

I usually just bring 6 and some extra cordage. If you want to use the additional guylines for a little more head/foot room I typically just use a couple rocks or just use sticks for stakes.

OP again, I bought some aluminum Aliexpress stakes and they're pretty soft. Also the stakes that came with my Copper Spur don't have hooks.

I'll buy some titanium stakes that have hooks, been out of tents for years, this stubby new stake design without hooks seems sub-optimal.

Zpacks makes some nice titanium shepherd hook stakes if that's what you're looking for. I have a few different tents, a tarp and a hammock and more often than naught use the MSR carbon core stakes, but I've used the shepherd hooks in the past and they work just fine.

left are the Aliexpress stakes, they're very similar to the included Big Agnes stakes

I think I'll get some titanium hook ones at some point, I can see these stakes getting very bent/blunted after only a week's use.

That's hilleberg Y-peg copies. Some of them seems to have some strange welding on the on the right, don't know what that's about.
At least hilleberg stakes do not get bent after banging on them with a rock against a rock, normally I keep banging on them until either the rock beneath either breaks or moves away. They do not bend after a week.

When I'm alone on a long stream I'll do the bare minimum, like 4 pegs for a tunnel tent.
Worst that can happen is that it starts to blow and then I'll just add more pegs in the night.
If you know it's blowing then add as many pegs you want, the tighter the tent is the quieter it will be which makes for better sleep.
But when I'm camping with my family I do everything by the book and secure the tent fully.
