You ever actually camped with just a tarp? Shit sucks. Bugs exist. Ultralight bivy tents are cheap as fuck, now. You can easily find one of roughly the same weight and packing dimensions as a tarp and stakes, for maybe three times the price of a tarp. They are cheap pieces of shit and will rip after a few trips, but honestly aren't that expensive and you don't do enough from-bike-camping for it to matter.

Bug suck. Bugs in your bag. On your bag. In your clothes. In your shoes. Fuck that. Tarp-only camping is for larpers and idiots.

Depends on where you live, don't it?
Where I live I need to worry about trapdoor spiders wandering around the ground. If I slept in just a tarp + bag I'd be fatally bitten every trip.

Ever camped any further out than your back yard? Because there's a whole lot of different environments on earth, and not all of them are swarming with mosquitoes and ticks.

I often camp with just a groundsheet and a light bag, or even lying directly on the ground.

To all the speds who think you have no way of bug proofing with said OP Pic, you COULD buy a few strong button sized magnets, stitch in literally just four into a custom made bug net, have four more on the outside of the tarp on the opposite side. Just dont be an ass and try propel yourself out with rumble guts and you should see it lasts a great deal of time. The floor will have protection as you could lay the net under your sleeping mattress.

Well it'd be a chore and a huge amount of extra fiddling every evening. I'd rather just carry an extra kilo of tent if it takes away 30 mintes of extra fiddling from every setup every night.
Besides, if you secure your bugnet with magnets and bury the other end under your sleeping corpse, you better make sure as shit that it doesn't come apart as soon as you swing your arm or something.

I went bikepacking recently and I opted for cowboy camping, got lucky with the fair nights but it worked pretty good.
It was in an urban setting most of the time but a foam pad and sleeping bag was all I had, no tent, bivvy nor tarp. The wind made for some uncomfortable moments though.

Ok two solutions.
Get a tent repair kit and sew in magnets to the tarp in the ideal points before leaving for the trip. Seam seal it too.

Or have the tarp set up and have a 4 extra magnets. Clip them where you want the bug net to hang. Attach bug net that already has the 4 magnets sewn in.

Air bubbles from the fluid reservoir can bubble up into the brake system and cause problems with braking. Unless you’re prepared to bleed your brakes out in the middle of nowhere, you run the risk of having ineffective brakes on a trail while hauling all your gear.

Dunno, I’m only smart enough to know it happens. I’m just trying to pass on my meager knowledge as I’m currently dealing with this issue because I was flipping my bike upside down to work on it instead of using a stand. For a while I was able to pump the brakes a few times and they would be fine but that stopped working and now I only have weak front brakes (it’s easily fixable, I just haven’t worked on it or ridden)
