PA Hike - Old Loggers Path

Anyone ever hike this trail in Pennsylvania? I'm going in a few weeks for my first time and looking forward to it.

It seems like a really easy relaxed trip but I'm wondering if anyone has any first hand experience they could share.

I wouldn't consider that easy, but depends on your fitness level and how many days you have to complete it.

Also, just by the way, alltrails is offering 30% off pro subscriptions for a limited time only. You get one year of unlimited offline map downloads and it is WAY easier than using a paper map and a compass.

We'll be hit the trailhead at 10AM on a Friday and just need to be back to the car by about 4PM that following Sunday.

As far as fitness goes I'm very active as a runner so I'm not too worried about anything other than my back hurting (history of back issues).

I've completed many 7-10 mile day hikes with 1k-1.5k elevation gain this year so far but I've only ever carried at most 5-10lbs on my back.

That's a pretty good deal - thanks for the heads up.

Make sure to download offline maps before you go. Turn on airplane mode on your phone if you are having trouble getting a quick lock on gps signal (also saves phone battery) - and bring a backup charger.

Appreciate the advice.

I have a printed out version of the map already and will have my phone on airplane mode with a large external battery in a drysack on me.

You don't need a printed out map. You just download the layers on alltrails, and it instantly knows your position on the map in real time. It is so much easier to just spend a minute downloading a map in alltrails than printing out individual maps for every trail you do. You already have your phone with you.

Make sure to click the heart to save the trail to your favorites list, and I download the alltrails and the topo map layers. Sometimes you have to open and close the app to reload it if there's no reception and you click on the heart on the bottom left of the screen to access your favorited trails.

I would also recommend going into google maps (if you have already done this, sorry), click the round icon on the top right, should be your google account avatar, or log in if you have to, click on the cloud with a slash through it, offline maps, on the screen that pops up, and click select your own map, and then highlight (make multiple maps if need be) all the terrain between your home and the trail you are taking, and hit download (with wifi on, make sure it gets to 100%). When you are driving to the trail, alltrails will offer directions, to open in google maps, and just turn on airplane mode if it isn't loading right away, and you will never be lost.

alltrails pro (alltrails + topo maps downloaded ahead of time, trails favorited), and google maps offline maps - no lost - no worry

have fun, looked up the trail, looks pretty, also a shoutout to quehanna wild area further west, been meaning to go back there and explore more

Once you have learned how the various apps work, it is pretty straightforward. Paper maps don't offer you your position in real time, alltrails and other apps do, and that's a crucial advantage. You can see what elevation gain is coming up at a quick glance and also mileage elapsed/remaining.

Airplane mode is your friend, bring a backup charger. I've used alltrails in very wild backcountry, no issues.

I've tried garmin standalone gps units, its a pain downloading .gpx files individually to the device compared to using a phone/app setup.

Make sure you have the entire route from your home to the trailhead downloaded in google maps. This could mean multiple maps if you are far away from the trail.

Also, another tip for both alltrails and google maps is to turn on airplane mode on your phone. For alltrails this should speed locking on to your position (the blue dot on the red line that represents the trail), and for google maps, when you are in a low-reception area, there's no way to "activate" offline maps they just show up when you turn on airplane mode and offline directions should then be possible.

Also download a compass app, I don't really use it to see which direction I am heading, but more just as a curiosity to see my current elevation. Some of the compass apps display your elevation, and your phone has a built in altimeter, so might as well use it.

Make sure to report back after you have hiked this trail!

Make sure to take lots of comfy pix and post them when u get back!

I like to take my phone out only to take pix or check my position on the map, and try to leave it securely zipped in my pocket as much as possible and enjoy my surroundings visually.
