Posted about it before but this was my favourite spot ever but less because of the view and more because of the torrential rain I slept through to wake up bone dry. Beautiful oak and ash ancient woodland on rolling downland. Felt like my ancestors were happy I was there.

So much time for hammocks, so sad that wild camping is illigal in the UK so we have to hide away from the nice views

Feels like a troll question but I'll answer it seriously. If you look at most of the hammock setups shown, they are using trees over a foot wide so these are strong, established trees that dont care about ~30kg (my weight /2 because two trees) being put through them. Furthermore, they are using wide bands (usually double looped) around the tree so the bark isn't under tension or under thin pressure.

If done correctly, hammocks are just as friendly for the out as bivvying or tents. Maybe add a little more content to your question next time, it comes across a little throwaway.

Double-layered hammocks are the answer, you can also put some ground pad in between to keep it warm without underquilt. I use DD Hammocks Travel in swampy mosquito land and they only buzz around angrily making it hard fall asleep.

Kek maybe you should’ve taken maths at school more seriously anon. Due to the angle of your straps the force on the tree is actually greater than just your pure weight. At 60kg. And with straps at 20 degrees from horizontal the effective weight held by each tree is about 80kg. It would be 30kg per strap if you were sat on a swing.

Odd sword but that frame looks pretty fancy. Is it a custom rig or did you buy it somewhere? I know I sleep like a baby when I'm out in my hammock so having somewhere in my house to hang it would be jazzy. Maybe not to replace my bed as a hammock isn't the best for two people but a nice thing to have right?

Not spirit level flat, no. But there's a big difference between lying in line with the hammok and lying across the diagonal. If you want to get weirdly semantic about it, it is not flat, but neither is a mattress, once you're lying on it. It's a silly distinction.

I hear your frustration mate. I used to think this too when I got my first hammocks. My body isn't shaped like a bannana BUT when I went camping with a mate, he explained that if you lie diagonally in the sheeting then you bisect the burrito shape of the hammock more effectively and are flatter. It's not as flat as a standard matress but it's much better. Once I started lying diagonally-ish, I slept like a kid.

I think that's why so many of the modern designs are asymetric; it's designed to keep you flat.

It's a gimmick. You can lie just as flat is a symmetrical hammock, provided it's long enough. And you're not forced to have your head on a specific side of the hammock's axis.

I earlier this summer took it down to the Northwest Georgia Mountains and it rained almost every day and I didnt get wet once. 10ft if you are below 6ft for a good diagonal lay and 11ft if your above 6ft but below 6ft 6inches. I have a 11ft warbonnet hammock and am 6ft 5inches and I can fit into the warbonnets asymmetric lay albeit without much extra room. If your even more of a giant than I am and are above 6ft 6inches you can get some custom manufactured 12ft & 13ft hammocks from Hennesey, warbonnet or most of the cottage vendors out there.

Got to take my new Hennesy out last weekend. Took a bivy just in case I couldn't find a decent spot but didn't need it. Such a cozy sleep, pic rel has my bag on the ground under the tarp but ended up with it in the hammock with me. Felt so cozy and contained without the faff of a tent. Packed up in 6 mins and barely a hint of crushed grass from me walking back and forth. Very happy, hammock convert right here.

get yourself a cheap tarp or piece of plastic to put on the ground under your hammock to keep your pack dry and to keep your feet from getting dirty while getting in & out of the hammock. Also bring a pair of sandals/flip flops/crocks or whatever your preferred easy shoes are as it sucks to have to put on your shoes & socks in the middle of the night just to go take a piss when it takes all of a couple of seconds to toss on a pair of sandals/crocks.

if you're not in a depression or run, pack cover under the hammock should be fine. there is a surprising amount of protection under a tarp.

Thanks man. It wasn't too bad. Bunch of cow shit around so was less comfy than was hoping for but was first time I'd scouted out a spot before wild camping it. Worth it for sure. Plus it's an excuse to get out twice rather than just the once.

Any pics from your spot on the Ridgeway? This is Sussex so probably similar geography with glaciated flat bottomed valleys.
