what sharpener do you use at home and what do you take on the trail with you ?

I just have a budget kitchen knife sharpener and that keeps mine sharp enough. A polish every now and then and dry it before putting it away to avoid rust.

Bark River Master Race. With their convex edge a pull through sharpener or lansky style wont work. I'm bad at wet stones. The strop block with various grits of sand paper keep ever knife of mine sharp and it's super simple to do. It's from DLT Trading. I love their business.

I've got a lansky guided system. Other than that I don't do much care for them, most of them are stainless, and the few that aren't either don't go /out/ with me, or have years worth of patina.

Cheap ass 400 grit diamond stone for the rough edges
King water stone 800/6k
Then a homemade faggot strop with some polishing paste.
If its carbon, apply some wd-40 on a rug and wipe the blade down. If its for food, then I use olive oil.

It would be a lot better, but I don't have any, and it seems to be really hard to find where I'm living. I had applied olive oil to a gouge and it has sat in my drawer a year now, and shows no signs of rust or decay, so I guess it works for what its worth.

I have a full set of venev diamond stones and a gig i use on my most expensive and wear resistance knifes. I also have homage let her strop with a 1um diamond spy

I oil some of my carbon knives but my best recommendation for knife care would be "Dom borrow your knives" and be careful when sharpening

I have a 1000/3000 stone. Honing steel for quick touch up. If i've bought a used knife that is very dull i will use one of those hand held kitchen ones to get the edge down something manageable, then maybe 600 grit wet sand, then the stone. I don't use strops. If there is a burr the honing steel will knock it off.

Also tip for buying whetstones: you don't need full size. There are a few nice ones available on amazon that are smaller and half the price.

whetstones are available in all sizes imaginable if you leave the jap stone bubble

and there is a big reason 6-8x2 inch was the default western size for the last 150 years.
less stone = more quick flattening, flattening in some cases never needed and faster cutting due to higher pressure

Get yourself a Diamond Sharpening stone like picrel. Not as messy as the other ones, and actually way faster. I´ll never go back to regular ones. They are a game-changer.

Get a proper oilstone set. Soft arkansas and hard arkansas are what I use (+ translucent arkansas for my razor). It's easy to use, and gives a much better result than "sharpeners" that just put a 45° angle on everything.

More stones than is necessary. They just pile up over the years. The ones I use most end up getting replaced when they wear too much or break, and no one buys used stones. I've never had to sharpen on the trail, but keep a small pocket stone just in case... in case what, I don't really know. Any smooth natural stone will do a decent enough job to get an edge that's OK enough for most tasks, if it really came down to it, and I keep a razor sharp pocket knife for delicate use, anyway.

A lot of artificial stones that are meant to be used with oil still wear relatively fast. I assume you are talking about hard Arkansas type stones, or something similar.

KME to set an edge I want when I get them, then occasional sharpening or if I chip one. Otherwise, a strop means I pretty much never have to use the KME again for each knife after that.

A good fine pocket stone beats loading the inside of your belt with compound for stropping and hoping it sticks. Probably only a concern if you whittle or cook. There are times I've been out with less than ideal steel and wanted to touch up a blade, mostly I use it on less adventurous vacations for cooking and whittling at camp.

For a normal axe, take a piece of foam (mousepad or similiar) and glue sandpaper to it. That will give the axe the slightly convex bevel you want.
Grinding it with a stone will give you a sharp transition between flat and bevel, which will "catch" on wood every now and then.
Only exception to this rule are carving axes, which you normally grind with a rotating stone to get them somewhat concave so they get razorsharp.
