Some Texans consider Austin to be cancer. An AIDS ridden Sodom is more accurate. Getting out of Austin is probably the best hobby there is for someone who lives there.
As for getting out, the springtime can be nice, but it's often humid and thunderstorms can get nasty. Fall and winter are surprisingly decent times for a weekend camp.
Texas has lots a woodland, plenty of decent lakes, trails are basically everywhere. The west is a mild desert, and the east is almost Cajun territory.
As noted, Texas does not have true alpine due to not having any mountains. Some of central and east Texas are hilly, but some pine forests are about the best you'll get.
A few words of advice for newbie Texans: Deet and Permethrin are your two best friends. Mosquitos, chiggers, and ticks are everywhere, and they're nasty down here. Thankfully, there are answers to that problem.
Also, Texas has a ton of snakes. In fact, Texas has more species of snakes than anywhere else on the globe. Thankfully, most of them are harmless, and the vast majority of the dangerous ones all look alike. It's just something to take note of.
