You want it to be rigid, steel and with big tires, at least 29x2.6 or 27+, preferably 29+
Also go back in time 3 years to before all bikes are sold out everywhere.

This pic is outdated. Iy now mounts vbrake (with Travel Agent).

I'm about to do a cold setting of the rear triangle to expand the dropouts to 135mm so i can install a 10x (11-42, i already have everything.

I've done hundreds of kms offroad on this thing, it's indestructible.

But for the moment I'm limited to the amount of slope i can climb. I need the 10x mounted as soon as possible.

Btw, the best time of the year to ride is in winter, with no vegetation, cold temperature and nobody around.

Nice! I've recently picked up a Trek 660 (1989 red and white) locally for about 80 bucks. The price was cheap enough that I don't feel stupid updating it with a threadless stem, wider handlebars (shoulders are like 50cm vs the 40cm the previous owner had), and matching black seatpost. I didn't realize the disparity of quality between a department store bike and purpose made machine before this, am now on the lookout for something similar to what you've got there.

I tried full rigid. It's good on smooth single track but if it's uneven i really miss front suspension. I ended up putting suspension on with a lockout toggle.

If you want a good gravel, you should probably go for a so called Hybrid, like the trek 700 series, they are made for 700c wheels, but built as mtb.

Also you need brakes with clearance from mud, so, something with canty or vbrakes mounting points. Clamp style brakes gets filled with all sort of dirt.

This winter if redone all my bikes, and I'm totally satisfied with what i have.

Probably my next project will be a 500watt ebike.

i really dont like these big thick tyres, they look pretty cringy desu. Your tyres don't have to be that thick to have a decent grip anyway, and if you're doing longdistance bike trips you will mostly be on cycle paths and roads anyway
