Redfin pike autist here. Tomorrow I'm gonna hit a few new ditches and inshallah catch more pike for my pond. I have obsessively sought, asked, and read about these fish for so long that I feel a great sense of accomplishment knowing my first one, a nice one, is at the taxidermist. In any event, I look forward to tomorrow. Hopefully will wake up reasonably early. Unfortunately it will be raining/storming for most of tomorrow but honestly idgaf about lightening etc if the fish are still biting. If God wants me bad enough to use lightening, it's my time.
Again, if anyone has any questions or wants to talk about redfin pickerel (or really any fish of south carolina), I'm game.
Picture is one of the many baby crappie I caught in a ditch today.

I fish 'em right at the mouth of the Columbia, the coho are pretty feisty and hit the lures like a damn truck. The nooks will hit them too, but not as often. If I fish nooks further upstream that's when I'll switch to spawn bags. Good luck bro

When you’re getting that hot water summer slump, sometimes you have to go smaller and slower. Fish get lazy in the hot water and don’t want to chase a spinnerbait that looks like a school of baitfish, they would rather go after a soft bait like a worm or crawdad that is slowly bouncing along the bottom.

But then again, I don’t fish rivers a lot.

That's a handsome lad you've got there. I've never used swivels directly on a spinner, I use a heavy mono leader tied to a swivel and it works out just fine.

The pros of a regular rod are basically everything except portability.

Even a 2pc rod breaks down fairly small and will feel far better.

how deep is the water you cast spinners in?
I rarely ever find spinners work for me, unless there's a larp deep pool in the creek.

dry flies and trout magnets seem to work no matter how deep/shallow the water is

Mostly pools, they're good for moving water but have a lot of resistance so not water that's moving too fast. Trout magnets are extremely versatile though and are my #1 producer.

When you buy a combo the rod will usually be ok and the reel will be the cheapest piece of shit they can produce, expect the reel to break within a few months or weeks. For smaller fish like trout and panfish you can find decent beginner rods starting at $20 and reels around the $30 range. What do you plan to fish for and where roughly do you live? It is not really possible to give you advice without any relevant context.

It is quite easy to assemble a rod and reel and string it with line. I'm not familiar with the midwest but there are some other anons here who can give you location specific advice. Local tackle and bait shops are a good resource for local information as well.

Have caught 10 redfin today I believe. In near-stagnant ditches like pic related.
