Slight Entomophobia here, want to go out and about off trails, hell even on trails.

I don't piss myself at the sight of bugs but rather the lack of knowledge about them/running into them without seeing them.

How do you deal?

If it helps I'm an Indiana resident. I've no knowledge on anything other than most bugs are afraid of people.

There are scary bugs, and there are nuisance bugs.

Realize that scary bugs (spiders, etc.) aren't all that scary because they'll usually either actively avoid humans, or be docile enough that they won't care about you. Bugs you actually encounter will almost always be nuisance bugs like skeeters, flies, ants, ticks, etc. These can be dealt with by using repellent (I like picaridin lotion), appropriate clothing, or something like a face net.
The only time I've really had to deal with crawlies is when I tarp camped in warm weather with my sleeping bag wide open and some beetles or something got in there. If you have a tent then just keep the mesh part closed and they won't be able to get in.

Just wear a full bodied bug net bro.

You don't understand phobias. This shit is kinda random.
I also have a phobia of insects, it doesn't really stop me from dayhiking, but overnighters are pretty much impossible (tried, I just lock myself in the tent the entire time).
Dunno about OP, but for example for me a cricket will make me want to climb up a wall, yet a bee or wasp won't even bother me (unless it's inside the house).
It's fucking annoying to react with a complete sense of dread when faced with something as mundane as a bug, but it be like that sometimes.

I assume in Indiana during the Fall, the mosquito problem is pretty high? If that is the case get yourself a face net (I have one from OR) with a 'fine' mesh. Also light, well fitted gloves to keep the bugs off of cuts and to keep yourself from getting cut.

You are certainly correct with phobias being random, I'm absolutely fucking terrified to be near what looks like a wasp or wasp nest even if it's dead. I don't understand why or what caused this but flying stinging insects that can strike multiple times make me stop like a deer in headlights or sprint away from the area

He might have, heck, he probably did.
I was just pointing out that phobias are complex shit that vary a lot from person to person and that "facts and logic" don't really do much about it.
Maybe exposure really is the only way, but damn is it hard when you feel a complete sense of dread.

His fear of the animal makes him only able to react in what is effectively pre determined fight or flight emotions, which is irrational for a little flying bug

OP, I can relate, I can touch and pet most (either too small to trigger my phobia or too large, the slower the better) bugs, but when I hear them fly or they surprise me I feel an absolute sense of dread, like petrifying feeling, even if I know said bug is harmless. it is absolutely irrational, and exposure can only help slowly and momentarily. I have been living in a place with no bugs for 2 years and my phobia of certain bugs like stinkbugs and centipedes are on an all time high

No, because wasps aren't a serious threat unless you're allergic in which case stay in your bubble.
99% of the time they leave you alone unless you hit them. 1% of the time they give you a few stings that dont hurt worse than a cut/blister and go away after a few hours.
