Hello /out/.
I've been finding these beautifully sparkly rocks in a park in upstate NY.
They are shaped like rectangular prisms.
Are there any geologists here who could help identify?

Nope, granite isn't foliated like that. It's definitely metamorphic, probably some type of schist. Schist and gneiss are common in the mountainous regions of NY.

As others have said, it's a diamorphic gneiss. These are used to line the beds of illegal ginseng grow beds out in the wild, though. I'd be very careful with collecting too many. They're highly sought after by these growers and will not hesitate to forcibly collect them from you at gunpoint if necessary

I’m actually a geologist also in upstate ny. Granted I suck with igneous and metamorphic rocks, but that looks like a slate to schist. Did you find it near the adirondacks? If it was a gneiss there would be banding.
