it's no joke just like the rest of southern california wooded parks just surrounded by water
not really beaches so its not worth the trip over by slowboat

I've backpacked in the Los Padres and Angeles National forests. Camped in Joshua Tree.
They're all great to camp in but be aware that they're very hot and you can't have open fires anywhere.

I have a little experience in Los Padres. Too hot, difficult to access for most of the year, but in the right season it is nice. Snowy peaks, large evergreen areas, surprising number of flowing creeks for the area, and of course lots of dry dead stuff. I don't worry half as much about bears as I do mountain lions. Also, don't get caught in a fire or start one, they are regular occurrences there. Oh and personal use of fire is illegal, even gas stoves. Your best bet here is trespassing.

I was in Tahoe last week, not camping though. Saw three bears in the week I was there. The campfire ban would make camping shitty IMO. Not sure if the ban is statewide or when you'd be going.

I've been camping at Tuttle creek which is in either Mojave or eastern Sierra. Nice spot, cozy and pretty mountains. It definitely made me want to go camping regularly...but I kinda want to check out other campsites too... I just don't know any

The 4 hour drive is pretty too
