A legitimate thread would have good discussion.
You could create a "planning to go to xyz mountains this weekend, what should I expect" thread on monday, see the replies to help plan your trip through the middle of the week, and go on your trip over the weekend, and then report back to that thread with updates/pics once you got back.
Nowadays, shitpost threads get 4-5 low effort replies within 1 hour of creation, bump off all the legitimate discussion, and then die after a couple dies once the shitposters get bored and decide to create another shitpost thread for a quick and easy dopamine fix.
A lot of the oldfags who put real effort into discussion and contributing OC have left, including jordanon, antarcticanon, new england anon, etc.
The problem isn't just all the newfag spam, it's that the newfags chased away the people who made /out/ a comfy place in the first place
