Of every country I've traveled and backpacked, pretty much all of them have areas like these that are famous and high traffic. If you really want a good experience, you have to go where the average tourist won't.
As an example, this is Þingvellir, one of the most famous national parks in Iceland and a beautiful natural wonder. During the summer if it's not packed when you get there, wait 20 minutes and the next busload of Asian tourists will pull into the parking lot. If you really want to see Iceland, you go out into the countryside, maybe rent a cabin in a remote area and hike around.
You'll never get to enjoy the /out/doors if you do the most basic bitch shit than anyone can drive up to on a Sunday afternoon. Go to a National Forest or something.
