What does /out/ bring into the backcountry? I'd love one of those fancy Garmins but can't justify spending 400 bones on a GPS.

I'm sure you could find a cheaper GPS, or buy used. But then, maybe you don't need it.

Spend your money on topomaps and a decent compass. Enjoy!

Also, if you're still within cell range.... your phone can do a lot for you, especially if you use a maps program (i.e. google) with satellite imagery. but then, a part of me dies a little using this when I'm out there.

Paper map and compass are enough for pretty much everywhere on the planet, excluding areas where positioning gets hard, like high density jungles.

Learn to actually read a map rather than trying to figure out where you are once you're lost on your phone. Get used to the area, visualize it in 3D in your head, imagine the sceneries all around you, and you may just be able to locate yourself without even checking your map.

Alternatively, you can learn the forgotten art of geomorphology, a science that was once used when there were no aerial imagery to draw a map solely by looking at the scenery and figuring out how it evolved up to this point, and you may just leave your map at home. Yes, it works.

Or you can get yourself a GPS locator, around $50, Bushnell makes great ones, dunno about other brands. Couple it with a paper map, and eventually a compass as last resort, and it'll have a much superior battery life than anything else and be just as good.

Wait disregard that pic (also fucking Bear Gryllz), this one doesn't actually give you your longitude/latitude. Those that do, ironically, are more expensive, despite not making sense from a technical standpoint.

Pic related costs $70, it's the one I got to use several times, not mine though. Might be a good idea to check other brands for something cheaper, it shouldn't be that expensive, really.

I think I'd exclude the ocean, too. Not too many landmarks.

Before that, 60CSx.
Prior to that, GPS12.

I carry maps/compass too, but it's nice to be able to pull your tracks into a computer and look at where you were on Google Earth later.

Found a bunch of untouched areas last winter (pic related) by looking at where we were then marking the meadows in the GPS.

Hell of a lot more convienent.

Oh, and I got my 76Cx for $150. Don't need to spend $400 to get a decent receiver.

I dropped about 200 sheckles but was probably overkill, just need to mark places for later reference on digi maps for now. A trail blazer model than runs long on two AA's and water proof, much geocahing crap I don't use, good menus and intuitive system though. e-trex 2 but I didn't research for long.

New front bumper put on my sled, cleaned exhaust valves tonight, i'll deal with the skid/suspension tomorrow and it should be ready for the season.
I'm ready for winter.

My old 60CSx on the sled, we had poked around from the east side and tried to get back to Area 54 from where we were.... ended up in a huge stuckfest and turned around to follow tracks out. The following week we dropped in from the 54 side and snaked through the trees, found a way to get through and connect the tracks. We were so close, just needed to go about 200ft east.

Could you do this with a map? Absolutely.
But it's a hell of a lot easier with a GPS mounted right on the dash.

I use a map, although i have a compass i rarely use it because i spend most of my time on trails and its fairly easy to get a good sense of direction. Sometimes use my phones GPS with pre-cached maps but its usually just for things like distance and speed info.

Map\recent sat pic of area im going to travel in and compass. Basic navigation and map reading is pretty easy one you get the basics. At night it gets harder. And in dense forest like jungels.
I went innalocalhills once with only a compass and general direction of a taget to go to. Navigating is fun as fuck, but if youre not experienced go to places where you can still contact aid just in case until you gain experience.

Indeed you're right, I was talking about its side use as a mean to help drawing maps based on little information, using geomorphology to fill in the gaps, which died with the birth of aerial photography.
