I'm going to do an extensive hiking trip in NE Montana this winter, how effective are these coats at combating cold? Are they just a LARP?

Looks like cold war era Bloc to me. I have the Czech M85 which is in essence the same, bulletproof parka with great water resistance and comfort but bulky. Was legit sweating while wearing it at Mount Selwyn @ freezing and a tshirt underneath. If this here jacket is a direct copy, which it looks like, the liner should be removable. Go to Varusteleka or Epic Militaria and look for the Czech one to be safe, if you can't find evidence it was an issued uniform.

Get a Afghanka VSR-93
I always wanted one myself, but they are too expensive for what they are. I´d only get it for Fashion/Sentimental/Collecting purposes, since there´s better Mil-Surp stuff for outdoor activities, that are cheaper. If you can get one for cheap however, go for it. I live in Germany, and the one I want starts at 130€.

I got the modern russian army fur jacket that I got for 100 bucks with the pants in flora camo. Its not a meme, but its pretty heavy. I was fine in -10F weather with a light long sleeve thermal shirt.

I have both of these. They are insanely warm but even more insanely bulky. The Afghanka has a removable liner, and the insulation is some unholy mix of fibers I don't even want to know what went into it but. Same for the pants. Hard to move your arms around in and get a backpack on and off.

Hmm those are warm but not very breathable. Fine if you're more stationary but if you are on the move you might want to consider a more breathable option. Layer with wool or something that breathes well.
