Does anyone use spinners for stream trout fishing?
I always find the mountain creeks near me are too cramped or shallow for spinners they only run 1-2 seconds at most.

Pic related is what i normally use on an ultralight set up

I have the same experience, trout magnets are king in little brookie creeks. Spinners are still nice to carry for pools and stronger currents though, I'd reccomend the Smith AR-S 1.5 gram. The design of the blade makes it spin well at low speeds unlike 00 sized mepps and the built in swivel is great.

I was initially trying to get them to bite a bit of worm on a tanago, but they were not interested at all. I ended up scooping them with my handnet. Most of them slipped through the holes in the net but I managed to get one into my tank.

I've never tried fly fishing before, only used a spin rod a couple times a year at the few spots I know of, is it tricky to get the hang of it?
I was thinking of having a go at fly fishing for salmon with a friend of mine this September, but it looks a bit intimidating in some ways with the lack of experience.

Its not that hard to get the hang of, especially since you have a couple weeks to practice. There are hundreds of excellent instructional videos on casting, how to rig, and how to work a section of water for every species of fish. The key is to be a competent caster before ever going fishing, practice at a park or on your lawn. Then go to a nearby river and fish it like you would for salmon. The more you practice the less your lack of experience will matter.

This is a lot if personal preference. I personally like swinging streamers so I have a commando head and a few tips for steelhead. A general purpose taper like on the aircel GP will be great for bobber fishing (dont call it that in a fly shop theyll get snooty) and with polyleaders is easy to use for swinging in a pinch. Then you'll need a fist full of flies, splitshot, and thingamabobbers. If you're interested I tie and sell flies and could put together an order for you, or there are plenty of flies for sale online.

The splasher rig does seem to work better in my experience but the sabiki/lazer minnow works great too. Duo makes some awesome jigs with assist hooks. The white pattern was the magic bait for me last year.

20-25 lb mono backer line. 15-20 lb flouro leader. fat chunk of skein under a 15g float. size 2 octopus hook with an egg loop knot. drift over holes until you get that sweet sweet bobber down. once you hook up hold the fuck on. let them take some line if they want but dont let them spoil you out. a good reel with good drag is worth its weight in gold. I use a saltwater penn spinfisher 4500. be aware of any underwater debris as they will head straight for it and snap you off. let them tire themselves out before you get the net wet because they freak out when they see it. just work them out good. it took me 3 years to land my first one. it's easy to get discouraged but stay with it and you'll be hooked for life.

They might not have everything you need or the exact things I reccomend but as long as you spend over 150 on a rod 100 on a reel and 50 on a line you should be fine. Also consider buying some other flies, bass and carp are fun on flies too.

This might seem counterintuitive but get your rod tip down and to the side, itll help you turn them better. If you make 10 casts without hitting bottom you're not deep enough, if you hit bottom every cast you're too deep.

About 1 acre. It turned over a few years ago, somehow bluegill and warmouth colonized it (no idea how, it isn't connected to any other bodies of water). So I'm trying to stock it with redfin pike, bass, bluegill and fliers. Will cull as many warmouth as I can catch since they compete with everything.
Before it turned over it was a tremendous bluegill, bass, crappie, shellcracker pond. I know I know, crappie are bad in small ponds but I really stayed on top of them and kept it all very well managed. Idk if you've been around recently but my autistic quest for redfin pike finally bore fruit and I've put about 20 in the pond so far. I'm sure they're feasting on all the stunted warmouth yearlings, but I'm not sure that they can survive in a pond with no running water, I guess we'll see. I've studied them extensively and this might be a first.

In Yurop it looks like Decathalon has some cheapo sets from the $30-$70 range. Not sure how good they are, you might want to go in person to check the qualitythe quality. At minimum avoid anything with a cheapo plastic reel.

The jannies should have been doing their fucking job months ago before shit got out of hand. I left the fishing thread last summer and came back to the same dumb bullshit.

Now to fishing, I got a 5' UL rod and an Okuma 1000 reel, gonna use it for panfish and smol brookies. Should I spool it with 4 lb or 6 lb mono or something else?

I did something dumb and snapped my line, got a huge tangle in it and cut it free. My reel also started being really rough and jerky when I reeled it in and feels very unsmooth.

Redfin pickerel aka redfin pike.
This was my first one a week or 2 ago. 10.5 inches, considered pretty big tho they occasionally get bigger. I think I've caught 22 all together and none were above 10 inches but him. He is at the taxidermist now.

after last weekends fishing ive realized some things about my reel

even with the drag set to very low, for some reason a fish cant pull out line, even decent pike

i dont know if this is just a thing with baitcasters

i absolutely hate the situation where your turning the handle and it literally does nothing, i assume it is the brakes causing this?

You do want to have different rods for different situations. Think about the rod you currently use for 20+ pound fish, and then imagine trying to use 4 pound test on it for panfish. Itd probably work but your rod might not even bend. Fiberglass 2 and 3 weights are popular for brookies. The cabelas cgr is what I have and I like it.

Today in the Redfin Roundup, I was bouncing the lightest jigs I have over submerged log piles, did pretty good. But the normal way I have been catching then was with rooster tails aka in line spinners. That guy that posts here from Florida got me started with them a while back iirc. Plus everything I read said they were the move for redfin. In any event, the local Walmart is out of the smallest ones which I find work best. Lot of bluegill, bass, warmouth, shellcracker, and even fliers also readily hit them. White or tiger striped ones seem to work best. I need to find more. Maybe from somewhere other than Walmart lol.

the smallest amount of cals drag grease will smooth it out. pull the reel apart and wipe the drag washers out add a small drop and wipe it on.then wipe the grease off is all that is needed. you can also look into upgrading the washers if you use the reel al lot on bigger fish

Fishing - I want to try flyfishing, but I'm not sure it's worth the buy in vs. just trying something new closer to home. So many new worlds would open up if I had a boat or more time to drive. At least I have a lake nearby.

Though fly fishing with an actual fly rod is much different. You're always gonna get a plunk from the bobber and you're not going to get many types of good presentation. You can dead drift just fine with it but spinning gear has always been better for bobber fishing, but you're going to be missing out on swinging flies (the bobber will make the flies want to climb in the water column and depth control is easier with a fly set up) and the bobber landing can ruin dry fly presentations. The best way to decide if fly fishing is something you want to look in to is to borrow a friends rod and see what you think. You could also try to get in hyper cheap, a shitty eagle claw combo from amazon will be akin to a walmart rod and reel kit for fly fishing but the reel and line will be the weakest link and fairly easy to replace (about $30 each for an aircel line and an echo base reel) and the rod being fiberglass will be fairly robust.

I've been fishing a long time, and whole up until recently it had been in ponds instead of swamps, ditches, and creeks, you'd still think if have caught these before. I have a 12’ collapsible glass pole. It's fun to use sometimes but in most cases I would prefer a fly setup or UL spinning setup. The ability to reel in and out line is very convenient. I've caught lots of brookies just tightlining wooly buggers in the current on my ultralight.

Hit the whopper plopper twice near a bush in the water. Sent it a third time as close as possible to the edge of the bush and he finally inhaled it. As someone who used to fish off a paddle kayak and upgraded to a pedal kayak I can say that any other negatives to a hobie are blown out of the water when you are able to free your hands up. If you are able to afford it, transport it and use it enough I would 100% get a pedal drive fishing kayak.

MeatEater has an episode about flyfishing for Chain Pickerel, it looked like lots of fun. I think you mostly fish for them the way you fish for a Northern Pike, except they don't get as big, so you use smaller stuff. Pike eat everything from birds to turtles and also every fish they can fit in their mouth. So you can use whatever pattern you like and if it isn't working, just change it up.

They are toothy bastards, and shred soft plastics, so soft plastics are my lures of last resort when fishing for pike. Last week I was fishing for pike in the BWCA and caught 1 fish per ruined Storm Searchbait paddle tail swimbait. Every fish bit the tail off. None of those fish were bigger than a big chain pickerel and they were 5 inch paddle tails on a 1/4 oz head.

water temp doesn't actually matter for fish (assuming you process them in same manner). if your catch taste earthy / muddy its from a byproduct of algae in the water, which by the time mid winter hits have largely died back from the large blooms of summer.

They're found in swamps, creeks. And ditches (provided the ditch holds water year round or is connected to such a body of water). Those 3 foot wide ditches, even nearly stagnant looking, that you pass while driving very likely hold pike, often significant numbers. Beautiful ambush predator. Will hit rooster tails pulled by cover or small jigs bounced over submerged log piles. white, red, and green roostertails seem to work best but the small jigs are better if you can keep from hanging them in the log piles. They almost always attack from behind so whatever you're using, keep that in mind for hook placement. The ones you'll catch are almost always between 6 and 9 inches, of the 42 I've caught, the largest was 10.5 inches. They fight hard and jump like a bass to shake the lure, and will make a run for cover immediately after hitting and throughout the fight.

Went fishing for the first time ever today using a dock demon.

Any tips for gently removing the hook from a fish while aiming to cause the least amount of harm?

Today was my second day ever fishing, and I used a dock demon and tried each of these baits on my hook but didn’t even get a bite. Yesterday I got a smallmouth and a bluegill.

Are these baits suited for those two fish, and maybe rainbow trout? I’m fishing in ponds with my bobber a little under a foot above my hook and a single small weight halfway between them.

Just toss it back, is the game warden breathing down your neck or something? Some states require a trout stamp I think but as long as the gear you're using is bass-focused you should be fine. Don't "possess" it if you're really worries, leave it in the water unhook and immediately release.

Fishing for calicos or sheephead on the pier, anything really. Only the mackerel were interested. They really like squid. I cut up a mackerel and cast it out far, but no takers. A heroin addict on the pier told me that croakers like mussel, so next time I'll come with a dropshot rig and look for some mussels. They did recently issue a warning about mussels having toxins or some shit and not to eat it, I wonder if they're safe to touch.

That's part of why I find ocean fishing so appealing. It feels rugged and adventurous. Getting hooked on the beach and having people watch you reel is a lot of fun. i much prefer plotting around finding spots, lillypads, reeds, a resevoir, and catching a fish in those spots, more akin to hunting, not to say there isnt finesse to ocean fishing, especially if you are chasing schools of mackerel or cod

You aren't likely to get either calicos or sheephead from the pier, too much pressure and not the right kind of structure. I spearfish off the shore in San Diego and would say for your best luck to fish for sheephead off the rocks and the calico at a beach with a shorebreak and lots of eelgrass beds and reef in close.

8ft medium surf rod and a 4000 size reel, use braid with a healthy length mono leader (for absorbing the shock of casting). You shouldn't need to spend more than like $200 for a pretty decent set-up
I just use random store bought surf casting rigs, or make my own dropshot style rigs with mono.
Try to look for rips and sand bars, you don't need to cast out nearly as far as you think either.
The bass bite always slows down around the peak of summer imo, I try to fish early in the morning to negate that somewhat

Go to the tackle shop and buy some 1 and 2 ounce pyramid stinkers, #4 aberdeen hooks (buy snelled or Snell your own), some #30 mobo or flouro, and learn to tie dropper loops. Tie the #30 mono to your main line, and have 2-3 full rod lengths. That's your shock leader. Then go to the beach, cast in to "the first trough" (where that sudden drop off where the waves crash to the first sand bar) and drag your bait across the bottom slowly, you'll know when you have a bite.

Spinning is better for most things but for bombing long casts and chunking big baits a conventional reel is best.

Fill about half of your spool with 20lb Trilene Mono and then splice your braid on with a Double Uni Knot. You'll be fine as long as you're not fishing around heavy current or big log jams. I've had 25+lb blue cats dig into my backing which is just 8lb mono and still landed them.

Do I need shallow creeks to fly fish? Most of the rivers and creeks in my area are too deep to wade far into.
Whenever I see videos of people fly fishing it's always in shallow creeks for trout.

The bigger the brown you keep the better the genes that you're eliminating from that body of waters gene pool. Maybe practice catch and release in the future and practice selective harvesting. That's not quite how it works. The line weight is measured by grain weight of the first 30 feet of fly line. Put too light a line on your rod and it wont bend enough to cast properly. Put too heavy a line on and it will bend too much, which is occasionally done to make rods load and cast better with very short lines. Say you fish a 4 weight bust seldom cast over 20 feet, it might be worth putting on a 5 or 6 weight line to help that rod load at shorter distances.
On to rod weight and fish size, its debatable. If I was fishing in a body of water where a 12-14 inch fish is the standard and I still want 6 or 8 inchers to be fun I'd want a 4 weight. If there was a distinct chance of fish 20 inches and up I'd feel undergunned with anything less than a 6 weight, and if 12 inches was trophy teir and most fish were 4-8 inches a 2 or 3 weight would be ideal but that's getting in to specialty gear

What do you use? I catch a bit of mackerel every summer and smoke them in the fall. Delicious fish. I usually have most success with a dark/silver herring lure and some black hooks on the line which they love for some reason.

8 is plenty. I used a 7'6 rod today out in the surf and caught fish. Way more fun to catch things on a shorter rod imo. If you're planning to cast and retrieve a lot, a longer rod with a huge reel is gonna tire you out faster. The 10-12 foot rods are great though if your plan is to bait and wait. If you're planning to use lures and move a lot, the 8 foot will be perfect.

I've started the season pretty late this year. Going to try and see if I can still hook some brookies or other trout before it gets really cold.
