>>2194429Just went on a trip this summer, first backpacking trip. 3 days, 2 nights. I had a shitty pack from my days in boy scouts and sinply bought 2 3liter jugs of water. Barely lasted me the 3 days, plus since it was in such a large container, when a jug was half full it would slosh around and really accentuate how bad my pack was. Also, turns out you need to drink water on the trail, so it was a pain in the ass making everyone stop every 30-50 min to unpack my bag just to sip.
Learning from this, I got myself a new pack, and took note from what my friend was carrying and got myself 4 2qt US surplus collapsible canteens, with 2 Alice pouches like picrelated. Turns out that the Alice standard belt width is the same as on most waist straps on backpacks, so I plan on mounting one or both of the Alice pouches on the waist belt of my pack for easy sipping, and 2 reserve packed In my side pouches that I can switch out when I stop for the night. If 8qt of water isn't enough, I also have a reserve 32oz Nalgene, and if THAT isn't enough for my next trip, I might get a water filter. Hopefully my weight distribution will be better next time with this new setup, ill post pics when my canteens come in the mail and if the thread is still up
