'Sup boys, my job wasn't paying me enough to afford rent once it goes up in the next few months, so I hit the road. I intended to just drive around for as long as I could, but my brakes failed going through an intersection a couple of days ago.
So that I can keep existing without being arrested for vagrancy, I've decided to hike the Appalachian trail from north to south.
I have an ALICE pack with a bad strap, a pair of jackboots, some changes of clothes, and less than a hundred dollars total. My bus leaves for Bangor in the morning.
What do you think?

I had to move in with my mother, and she kept upping the rent by a hundred bucks a month, then sold her house and gave me three week's notice that she was moving to Illinois.
I've lived on the street before, and I don't want to do that again. I've been in the army, and that taught me that I don't want to go to prison.

Basically covers it.
I'm going north to south, I'm from Wisconsin, so I can deal with autumn, hopefully I'll make it down to the gulf coast ahead of the frost and either find a pot of gold along the way, or trip over something and break my neck.
There's basically nothing here except taxes for people who work, and laws against being homeless.

So all I'm gathering from your purposeful ignoring of solid advice, areas of low-cost living rurally, well paying entry level jobs, and general lifestyle accommodating options, you just simply don't want to.
Be honest with yourself here.
You just don't want to try and participate and are looking for a way out. You're lazy and tired. You have emotional issues and can't motivate yourself to actually build a routine and work. You're tired of modern life and the struggles to survive through playing along.

But here's the fuckin thing: There's options. There's lifestyles you wouldn't BELIEVE are out there until you educate yourself enough to figure them out.

Like I said before, you COULD rent 250~ a month and EASILY save up cash here working PART TIME. Or you know another option? Buy a fucking 22 ft sailboat with 3k cash and learn to fix it up, anchor out or moor for 200/month, and work part time gigs throughout the summer and have enough to survive all fall/winter/spring literally sailing around the coasts.

Fuck man you don't understand the freedom that you have and this is coming from a guy stuck in the grind with a wife and four kids.
Get your head out of your ass and realize you have options. You just need to start thinking and learning again.

But to be fair, how is that a perfect solution?
He has no money and no access to welfare, even if he got a job, he would still end up having to sleep in the streets until he got the first salary.

Shit, my father is about to retire, never saved money because the salary was shit and now the landlord of 40 years told them (my mom and dad) that they won't renew the lease for the house.
They tried going for social housing because a normal rent is about as much as my father will get from retirement.

There are food banks, rent assistance, section 8 housing, but the issue is that I was barely making enough to be eligible to rent an apartment anywhere close to a potential job, and rent is going up across the board.
I would need either rent assistance or section 8 housing, and getting either of those without being crippled, insane, a single mother, or black is almost unheard of.

Alternate lifestyles require money. A 22 foot sailboat is something in the neighborhood of 10k, plus however many thousands of dollars it costs to pull it out of the water for maintenance every year, food, maintaining required emergency equipment, anywhere from $50 per day in dock fees, man I didn't have enough money to pay rent and buy bread while looking for another job and waiting for my application to go through and the background check to clear.

I know at least three warehouses down the road that start $17 an hour which is enough to afford your own apartment much less having roommates. Plus those places offer almost unlimited overtime. one of my first jobs was warehouse work. was getting paid close to $70k a year after three years at $23 an hour because I worked tons of overtime. they will train you on forklift and you can be making $20+ an hour your first year

I've been homeless a while too in the Winter. It's not something to be taken lightly. Adequate prepration is definitely needed. In my experience the most important thing is hygene. If you don't have a way to clean yourself and clothing the weather impact will be 10x bigger on you.
The next thing is water, you can do without food quite some time as long as you have access to clean water.
Next is shelter.
I don't think you will last very long. But considering there are others doing similar ask for their help and try to stick together. You'll probably make it if you can band up with others and help eachother in any way.

Get some organic soap or something bio degradable that you can clean clothes with. You'll be happy you did.
I'm planning something similar though I have access to a small savings I can use and if shtf I do have a safety net.
I would look for other options first because unless you can arrange

Christopher McCandless sets off, from California in an old car he rebuilt himself (he replaced the fenders and painted it), on a trip to the Daytona 500. Luckily, there's a race about to start. Christopher...er "Alexander Superspeeder", who changed his name, pays the $125 entry fee for the race.

Unfortunately, Alexander Superspeeder doesn't have a race car. He does however have an old bicycle still. He uses the bicycle to race. He makes it only 3 laps before he is too tired to steer straight and veers off into a race car and is killed.

Some Jew picks up his story and writes a book about his life and how he followed his dreams. Another Jew makes a movie about it. Armchair racers around the world adore him.

I was homeless in 2019, didn't get much better in 2020. Basically just took 3k I saved and spread it out buying nothing but ramen and canned chili. Have 3 guns so I could hunt(raccoon and possum isn't too bad). Bounced from campsite to campsite living out of my air force issued duffel. Where I screwed up: I got an appartment, and realized how much money that drains just for me to have a roof over my head. Yeah, I know. I changed busses five times over two days, every time but the last, my bag was moved for me. When I got to Boston I was tired, and didn't check.
This one is totally on me, but I've already put in a lost item ticket, most likely it'll just be an extra day hanging out by the bus stop until the next one drops it off.
If not, it's not the end of the world, I'm wearing my boots, I have my ka-bar, my laptop and camera, and I would have had to replace that ratched ass ALICE pack anyway, one of the straps was broken.

Always look out for birds, these fucks will always lead you to something.

Find a mushroom wait to see if any insects have landed on it, if so its edible... most likely. Plus its near the end of August which is when the autumn moisture rolls in which booms mushroom growth so this will add to your survival rate.

Taking a shite use moss if you can find any.

Listen for animals if its too quiet then there is predator in your area. When its loud with noise the creatures that dwell there are relaxed

OP i've read allot of this thread but im not gonna get through all of it. allot of what people are saying seems to be them larping about how you could have/ should have fixed your life rather than actually giving you advice but then again you came to this shitty Mongolian basket weaving forum so i guess that should be expected.

first off i wanna say you shouldn't kill yourself because there's a world of possibilities out there, especially since you've hit fuckit.

secondly when it comes to actual advice id say grab some duct tape and fix up that pack as best you can. you don't want that giving you undue pain.
keep your feet dry when you can and don't sleep in your boots, that last thing you need is blisters and fungus.
be as nice as you can to people you meet on the trail and try to look as nice as you can. assume everyone will be an asshole and give them a chance, you'll probably find people to be quite agreeable.
also maybe sell whatever device you're using to post this for extra trail cash, this shits no use to you without power. a journal and some good books to read will likely be better for your mental health than a dead electronic device.

finally i just wanna say, if you're gonna kill yourself/die. don't hurt anyone if you can help it and if you can think of anything to do so then make it badass. if you're gonna die then you might aswell go down in flames and be remembered for a while.

I like that the premise of this thread is not that OP was fired and living the /out/ dream- but that he "wasnt being paid enough" for his job that was probably part time considering all the posting and vlogs he makes. OP wants to play pretend; it is the subject of all of his videos- and that is completely fine, except that he sees himself as a victim and has forgotten to take off the mask. He has become a negative person, an aggressive and threatening presence. He has lost the ability to connect to others in a social way, and has doubled down on the larp of being a trail hobo- which God knows we need more mentally ill, aggressive, and armed (if not a retard who couldnt hold onto his bag during public transportation) losers on our hiking trails.

Use this money to buy essentials for survival now. Buy a cheap knife, the cheapest fishing pole you can find with reusable bait that favors the area you'll be staying in, buy a water bottle container as well as some cooking were you can use to cook and boil over a fire.
