When I was a little kid the adults would tell us scary boogeyman stories of the north pond hermit to get us to behave. None of the adults thought he was real. When he was caught by police I went to my parents and showed them. I freaked out. They were stunned. They were just trying to scare us and keep us kids from staying in the woods past dusk. We all saw the news and were like "WTF HE'S REAL?"
It was insane. No one had even the foggiest idea that he was anything other than a campfire story to scare kids. I don't see how he survived Maine winters for so long.
