I just bought a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo Tent. How necessary is seam-sealing? I'm supposed to be using it in the next few days for a multi-day hiking trail but I don't think I can seam-seal it in time.

You've checked the weather for where you guys are planning to head, right? Does it seem necessary to have the seams sealed ?

I don't know really, that's kinda what I'm trying to find out. First few days are forecasted sunny/cloudy then last couple there is a bit of light rain forecasted. But I'm going to Scotland so the weather can be a bit volatile I've heard. Basically, what I want to know is whether seam-sealing is only really necessary for torrential/very heavy rain or whether my tent will get fucked even in some light rain if it's not properly seam sealed.

my friend has the same tent and yes you should seam seal the top and down along the seams. This tent will become absolutely useless if it rains. Seam sealing only costs about 20$ off amazon so see it through. Also stop buying Chinese garbage off Ali-express, you are embarrassing yourself.

Kind of regretting my Lunar Solo purchase. I mean it has worked well in rain and hail for me so far. I seam sealed mine. The only problem I have is condensation. Pretty annoying waking up in the morning to have a wet tent inside. I'm starting to move towards tarp/floorless setups.

This is why I'm gonna bring a microfiber towel with me so I can wipe it down when I wake up. Although it seems extremely well ventilated so I don't know why it would get so much condensation. Unless I'm being a complete retard and ventilation is what causes condensation? I don't know.

I wanted a tent that is very light and packs down very small. That tent is about 6x the weight and pack size.

Half of the weight is from the stock stakes.
If you aren't new to camping, you know that stakes are usually the first thing you replace.

but the main point was; it's a great tent stock for 40 dollars not a 200 tent that needs a 20$ water treatment

And as such you buy a $120 tent for $240 and still have to do the same steps people criticize chinks tents for.

Just seam seal the fucking thing, it's not that hard and it doesn't take long.
Heck, if you were lucky enough to not rain, you could do it while camping.

Yeah I am thinking I’ve been slightly ripped off but to be honest, I’m not too stingy about money, if it’s a good tent and it lasts me many years then I’ll be happy with my investment.

Hmmm I didn’t think of this, good idea. I’ve just ordered the sealer next day delivery off Amazon, was gonna postpone my trip a day but if it’s not forecasted to rain I guess I could just go ahead with it and seal it when I’m there.

Where has /out/ been that they don't know the majority of tents aren't seam-sealed on purchase unless you request it from the manufacturer? It's a labor intensive process and they pass it off to the customer so they don't have a warehouse of set-up tents smelling of xylene.

OP, most stitches do okay in light rain but it's always a good idea to seam seal. Especially with non-freestanding tents as there's a lot of stress at the seams for a taut pitch. It's very easy. You could do it on the trip but your tent might stink and you'd have to leave it pitched tight. Could be done if you have a long day in camp with no rain.

Condensation just happens my guy. SMD has some great options for ventilation but it can't help you if your in a valley on a late summer trip where water drops from the sky with the sun. Campsite selection and leaving the doors open when you can. Pitch it tall if you aren't expecting gale-force winds. Go to bed dry.

Okay thanks for the useful advice, I actually seam-sealed it yesterday and left it to dry overnight so hopefully I’ll be all good.

Awesome tent. I always used the second pole to pull out one of the side attachment points, more than enough room for a tall person & backpack inside. Seam sealing isn't mandatory, wouldn't bother for just a few days long hike, the silicon is most useful to make grippy patches on the floor.

Any single-wall tent has condensation problems, not a big deal to just wipe off in the morning. This tent can be pitched different heights easily as well, 6 inches off the ground in nice weather, on the ground for storms, alleviates it a bit.

Qwik tip; run the front line under instead of over the vestibule door to hold it up more. String a Blake’s Hitch to adjust tension a bit without leaving the tent in rain.
