I don't really do long hikes so i carry enough birch bark to make my lack of fire lighting skills not matter. A great pile of birch bark and matches never failed me

Matches. The longer ones. If it is going to rain, I put the box in a plastic bag. I don't use anything else and they give you a generous amount of fuel/wood that's guaranteed to burn.

I carry a few bics, fuel is a featherstick. backup is storm matches followed by a presto-fire log nubs I have in a ziplock baggy.

never had a problem lighting a fire.

i typically carry 2 bic lights when hiking or 3 minis on overnights. i've never had more than 1 fail at a time and 2 is 1 and 1 is none so 3 is two.

What's that mushroom and how is it used? In my language it is named "fire starting mushroom" and you see it in forests a lot, but I never knew how to use it.

Do you mean horsehoof fungus? That's used for transporting fire. Grows on dead birch. It will smoulder for quite a while. Sit some birch bark or whatever in it, blow, fire. I've never used a mushroom for actually starting a fire any other way tho.

What? Are you saying use beech bark for tinder, not birch? Do you actually do this?
Or are you saying the fungus grows exclusively on beech? I'm surrounded by birch and have collected quite a lot of this stuff. I know that in some places it grows on beech but that doesn't make your statement any clearer.

Bics are OK, but lack the cool factor of the zippo. Zippo is cool and reminds me of my father, but leaks gas. I run a butane torch zippo - best of both worlds.
