I’ll be taking a month long road trip through Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado this November. Am hoping to be able to do at least one overnight+ Backpacking trip in each state with as much car camping as possible in between, as visit some ghost towns and whatever other national monuments I find. Hoping to pick some locals brains about what to do and see, or what to avoid

Stay away from the southern part of the state, there’s nothing to see other than shrubs and dirt. I hear the northern parts are really beautiful
If you do end up going to the south anyway, check out the Organ Mountains by Las Cruces. They’re really beautiful, although there’s not much to do there besides a couple of newbie trails
Avoid Albuquerque like the plague. It’s the Detroit of New Mexico
Arizona has some nice lakes too from what I saw

If you are driving from CO to UT take the exit for rout 128 off 70 to Cisco. Its an abandoned town, then proceed on it all the way to Moab. Tons of amazing hikes, and scenery along the way. I had no issues sleeping in the car in some lots, and scenic pull outs.
Arches park can be packed, Canyonlands is just 45 mins further south and has far less people. Take the Shafer offroad trail back to Moab. you dont need 4x4, a regular car should do fine. again, amazing sights.
If you want to visit antelope canyon, you need to book in advance, it has shitty hours, and is on indian reservations so you cant just drive there. need to be in a group

I forgot to mention in the OP that I’ll be driving through those states in that order, but I’ll check out Cisco.
Gonna try and stick to as deserty terrain as possible in CO as well, places like gateway and such

I just got back from a similar trip, though I went to CO on a last minute change to see Mesa Verde.

Drove from Dallas to Albuquerque, up to Mesa Verde, down thru AZ then up to Kanab UT. Hit Bryce and Zion and Vermillion Cliffs, then the north rim of the Grand Canyon, snuck into Antelope Canyon, then back home.

You should check out Zion it is a rock garden. Mesa Verde was meh unless you like cliff dwellings. Vermillion Cliffs was the most /out/ place, very few other vehicles on the dirt roads so was alone the whole time. The only time I saw other people on trails was at White Pocket.

If you're in serious high country, maybe and I don't think anon is heading to Ouray or Leadville. First snow is generally Halloween everywhere else. Doubt it's gonna be that cold when he drives through, least of all in the Four Corners.

Most of the four corners region is already freezing at night by Nov with the exception of the bottoms of the canyons in AZ and UT and the low parts of the painted desert. A couple towns in NM and AZ are already in the high teens to mid 20s by the first week of Nov, days will be mild though. Flagstaff averages 28 freezing nights in Nov and it's much more mild than some other towns in S. CO, NM, and UT.

It's cold at night, but not what you're describing. I've lived here my whole life. It snows on Halloween, mellows out for a few weeks then gets actually cold in late November. That is, unless you're in the high country which OP probably isn't going to be.

Flagstaff, Pagosa Springs, smaller shithole towns like Tsaile and Dulce, Monticello UT etc. are all in the 20s at night in Nov regardless of whether the snow comes early or not. First snows normally come around halloween but it doesn't really get heavy until Jan-Feb, first freezes come in late Sep to mid Oct. If you want to avoid hard freezes you have to go to towns like Page, Tuba City, Moab, Winslow etc. You won't avoid freezing temps driving through the region over multiple days in Nov.

Yeah, that's your continuous major malfunction. We aren't talking about fucking Flagstaff. We're talking about Colorado. Specifically, the Four Corners region of Colorado. OP will be fine. Cortez and Durango are pretty mild in November. Jeans and t shirt weather during the day, usually a hoodie during morning and night. Yes, it can get very cold. It can also snow. It's uncommon tho and you're making a big deal out of nothing. If I can comfortably camp the back side of Purg during third season, OP will be fine.

Do some pack kayaking on Lake Powell, just rent a kayak, go to a marina, and paddle around til you find somewhere to camp. Really cool little oasis but beware the boomer houseboats. At night and in the morning it is insanely surreal and peaceful.
