Is your doctor a sports medicine guy? Most non-sports medicine rehab doctors are focused on geriatric care and actually don't know what the fuck they are talking about when it comes to rehabbing a younger person. I blew up my shoulder in a car accident and the first rehab place was like "You can lift 10 lbs over your head with your bad arm? Congrats, you're healthy!" and meanwhile I was doing 80 lbs with the good arm and I used to be symmetrical. It took me three tries to find a rehab specialist who knew what I needed and wanted to get me back to where I was, and it ended up being one of the guys the Vikings use for that sort of thing.
Obviously start with shorter distances and work your way up, a mile might be a good first walk, and see how you feel from there. You should do it as often as you can, but not more than 3 days in a row, and if you find yourself plateauing, cut 20% off of you distance and go down to 2 days in a row for a week, before trying to push yourself again.
