That thing reminds me of this thing. It's like they kind of got it almost close to being right, but fucked it up so irreversibly that there is no saving the design. There are compact bivy bags and storm shelters that function almost like this.

This is a fully enclosed tent without tent poles. The difference is that the design doesn't hinge on you sitting on the ground with your hands and feet sticking out of the shelter like a retard.
You can't pack it in your shoes... but why is this even a desirable feature? I mean, seriously. What were they smoking when they designed this thing?

It's from the 60s indeed.

Though the weight and packsize aren't bad at all, considering it can be used as a poncho and a tent, and it costs 5€.

It's as big and heavy as your average poncho and tent, and it's much less expensive than your typical >$100 ponchotarp.

It far from sucks.

Haven't these people ever heard the saying: a pound on your feet is worth ten on your back?

Then there's the fact that anything on your feet gets covered in grime, dirt, and water makes for a gross shelter. Plus, there's no poles so your head is what holds this up?

This has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen, and trust me I have seen some dumb things.

Same idea behind many backcountry quilts. They have a little zippered hole in the middle that you can fit your head through and wear the thing like a down jacket.
