but the COVID tourists came all at once, and started replying to each other and bumping each others bait threads.
The thread still die after a couple days, but the problem is they simply create new threads. /out/ has a pretty high new thread-to-current-replies ratio, and that's because of all these low effort threads created by covid tourists

There is an increasing number of dumbass threads created asking a single question which get no replies yet occur in such high volume that they kill relevant threads it’s pathetic, especially when most of them are essentially “I’ve never gone outside in my life, how do I climb Mount Everest”

I LARP as a farmer. I dont know what I would call what I do, homesteading lite maybe?

I have 50 acres, a couple tractors and some pieces of equipment. Wife and I garden in a smallish scale, but have expanded every year, and am building a greenhouse to extend our growing season. We preserve and can a good amount.

Have a dozen laying hens and sell the eggs we dont eat. I hunted a lot as a child and am trying to make more time for it this year.

Have a good amount of standing timber on our property, I harvest and process my own firewood, and am currently building a sawmill to make my own lumber.

Going to cut some cedar posts this winter and fence a section in the spring and try my hand at raising a few pigs

Pic related, last fall after clearing a few acres of grown up pasture

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I cut my own firewood and recently have started saving 8-10ft sections of treas I fell with the intent of eventually milling my own boards. I have a forest on my property with a lot of oak, black walnut, and sycamore. Anyone here have any experience with this or resources I could check out?

Well if you can be as efficient as pic related, which I imagine is probably difficult to maintain, you would need less than 2 acres (assuming the single house is made for a family of 4).

Funnily enough I work at a lumber mill and people send in logs fairly often to have them cut on our mills. If you want to do it yourself try >>>/diy/ but if you just want the boards cut into logs try calling and placing an order with your local lumber mill.

my advice is start small first of all, I'm talking a small garden and read a book, maybe start with the one in the OP. if you search on amazon there are about 200 million books on homesteading and self suffieciency and even if 90% of it is garbage advice you'll probably learn at least one thing you dont already know. I've heard a lot of praise for the foxfire books but buying all 12 of the will cost you over $200.

Start Simple Plant a raspberry trellis, small orchard and a garden. Don't go into it as a noob thinking you're gonna get cows and milk. Plant a garden on plastic mulch so you don't get discouraged by weeding / or if the weeds take over and all you have to do is water or set up a irrigation system. There's some youtubers that know what they are doing and a bunch that don't.

What's the catch though? There's a lot of pretty looking land that's quite fertile in places near the central asian border, and it's really fucking cheap (like $1000 for a hectare) so why the fuck isn't anyone buying it?

Would you consider hiring people to expand the farm?
Does the work ever get overwhelming?

Do you plan weeks in advance to time the workload for harvests?
How much of an issue is excess produce and how time consuming is sales?

Also does anyone know if reclaimed strip mined land is not worth looking into, or is it not suitable for farming?
It's the only affordable land for sale near me.

I need some advice on something very dumb and I don't have much time left. I'm going on a one-way tour from Portugal to Germany, completely on foot. No public transports, not even a bike or an hotel stay. I must absolutely leave within the end of the month thus I got only 11 days for any extra preparations

I'm bringing 500 euros cash because I can't use my cc once I get going and I don't have much on my account anyway, but at least I already got a lot of camping and some larp gear I can finally put to use. I'm not gonna list everything now but if necessary I will later. I expect to eat only rice and multivitamin pills for at least a month, I already have the pills and rice prepared, I added some dried almonds and powder milk at last minute just in case the pills and rice don't cut it.

The purpose of the tour is getting myself used to being out there 24/7 and move around both natural areas and urban areas during cold seasons without leaving trace and being as stealthy as possible, once I reach Germany I will settle for a couple weeks in any desolate area I can find to do physical training until I'm ready.

I expect that 500 euros will suffice for replenishing food and multivitamins for a period of at least 5 months just in case something goes wrong. No unnecessary questions, I'd rather read some advice, any kind of advice helps because I know there is something I'm overlooking but I cannot ask anyone irl to help me with this.

The foxfire books are all I can recommend. There are 12 volumes covering probably more than you could ever need. Personally I only own the first one. You can get it from their website for about $230 or suck Jeff Bezos dick and get them for about $200 on amaz*n

Ok so how realistic was this? Aside from the obnoxious editing and madeup challenger and drama, I'm feeling gaslit by they way they build, namely their foundations.
We live in a similar climate, with ground being mostly clay, and the way we used to do it is dig out wide holes a meter deep, spaced out every couple meters, pour concrete to form wide foundations around brick pillars that would stick out of the ground and support the weight of the house. That's where we'd also insulate those so that moisture wouldn't creep up and damage the load-bearing logs. I think we'd also let the resulting piers settle in the earth for a while.
These guys,however, built a two-storey log (freshly felled) cabin on metal rods they'd patted into the ground with their excavator's bucket, with at least a meter of those sticking out, and in general very little attention had been paid to that part of the construction, there was one scene with the excavator and the next one they were already placing a floor (thin-looking for the climate, I might add). They claim these cabins are made to last generations. To me the whole thing looks flimsy and rushed, but these guys are apparently professionals and I don't see people crying hoax, so idk. Maybe Alaskan soil is firmer and they're ready to burn gasoline by the barrel to keep their huts warm in winter? I know many old settler huts were built on the ground but they didn't have to last as long either, usually weren't two-storey and people's standards and life expectancy were lower. These guys had a helicopter, 2 excavators, a lorry and an industrial woodcutter machine, you'd think a person who can afford that and is building something that should outlast their grandchildren, would approach it differently.

From what I know about soil science. Reclaimed land probably has bad, thin, soils that are probably in need of a lot of work before real planting can begin. So it depends on scale. Sure you could build a house, but you'll spend the next 20 years growing veggies in raised boxes in order to create the topsoil to grow in one acre of ground.

They're about the size of a jumbo chicken egg, and there's a much bigger percentage of yoke compared to white that chicken egg.

They're tasty, but they're seasonal layers. Your mileage may vary depending on your local climate, but I'm in the US Northeast and mine start laying in March and stop in September. My last hen hatched her last clutch last week.
