Just shit in the middle of the trail.
Better yet, shit in some small side trail that is clearly used but a bit overgrown. People love stepping on shit when they are exploring side trails.

Bury it the best you can. Sometimes it isn't possible to dig a hole so just do your best to dig one and cover it up with dirt and a rock or something. Make sure the toilet paper isn't near the top because that doesn't degrade as well as you'd think.

I started carrying one of those silicone bidet things that fits onto a disposable bottle. Weighs practically nothing, water is more plentiful than tp outside, and my hairy turd cutter stays spectacularly clean. Sometimes I'll dry with a minuscule amount of tp, and always wash and/or sanitize hands after. Never had anything splash back onto my hand or the bottle.

Small trowel of any kind works well. Just dig a hole 5 inches deep and 200 ft from any water source or trail. If you're in an environment where it wont break down. ie desert, canyon. Put it in a bag and carry it out.

Don't drop your pants fully. You just want to pull them down far enough to when you squat your ass sticks out. If you drop them all the way to your feet theres a chance you poop or pee on top of your pants. I bring a entrenching tool because it comes in handy as a shovel or hatchet, saw and moving around hot rocks. TP weighs nothing and its good to have in your bag for when a remote toilet doesnt offer some. You can leave some for the next person. Otherwise just wipe your butt with your hand and wash them.

I think hori horis fall into the category of doing too much. If I'm digging in the dirt with it every day, it'll dull fast enough to be a shit cutting tool without an absurd amount of maintenance. I'd rather bring a mini swiss army knife and light trowel than a gardening tool that does a supremely mediocre job.
