Compared to other light sources, they

>are fragile
>are bulky
>are inefficient
>can be messy
>required regular maintenance
>are more dangerous
>have lower light output
>are more difficult to use
>are more expensive
>are usually impractical

But the warm glow and flicker of the mantle is unbeatable. I bring mine out with me whenever I can.
