Help /out/ I need help deciding between 2 bags.
The purpose I’m going for is 3-7 day trips in the woods bushcrafting/camping
I’m looking at either the helikon Tex Matilda or the direct action mk2 ghost.
Im leaning toward the DA bag because of the ability to remove the waist belt. The idea would be to establish a camp, remove the belt and use that for resource gathering and have some emergency kit on there as well. Alternatively I’d just carry a belt in with the Matilda and not be a sperg.
Also open to other bags if someone has recommendations.

a Finnish friend here recently got the matilda and did some bush camping with it; it seemed to hold up well. The matilda is basically the medium ALICE pack but modern
the direct action looks like an over-priced generic MOLLE pack. I have a similar pack, but for significantly less- it hasn't fallen apart
The direct action is not an option between the two; heavily recommend the matilda if you are set those options
but for 3-7 days a larger pack would likely be more suitable, like an external frame

Theyre expensive as fuck, but worth every penny...cant beat Mystery Ranch. I use the Sawtooth 45 for dayhunts and day hikes, and swap bags out and put the Beartooth 80 on my frame for Backcountry camping/hunting. Just got back from an elk hunt and as always it did spectacular. 41 miles of hiking in 3 days. 46lb pack. Tons of fun

i own a DA ghost pack and like it a lot, but i feel like those two bags are hard to compare directly. keep in mind, the ghost is a fairly small pack, without the attached admin pouch it's like 27L or something. I use it as a day pack mostly. The detachable belt and harness is nice. I've found it handy for doing things like rock collecting with some dump pouches attached to it.

I don't own the matilda, but it's a bigger pack, says its 35L on their site. That's extra room for overnight stuff, and it weighs less than the overall weight of the whole DA ghost setup.

Don't get me wrong, the ghost is nice, the material is great, the back panel helps pretty nicely with keeping my back aired out, but it looks like they also raised the price by 50$ since I bought it. For that price, I'm not sure I'd really recommend it unless you absolutely want the belt functions. Personally, i'd probably say go with the matilda and use a study normal belt with some pouches unless you really want a detachable battle belt. On the other hand, if you want a 27L pack, a battle belt and harness, and a large admin pouch, you get a good quality set of them out of the ghost.

gonna further add to my first post. Since you're looking at Helikon stuff, you could consider getting their numbat chest pouch and use that to carry around day-use stuff when you leave your main bag behind. I've been eyeing that thing personally.
If you really are looking for modular stuff, there's other setups like the very expensive Hill People Gear packs. Their stuff has a separate hip belt which you can attach and detach to the pack, and use as a standalone belt. They also make a pack frame that works with the belt and can hold different size pack bags, which you could switch out at camp if you were so inclined. Here's a video of their bigger packs.

On the other end of the price range, at least in the US, there's some inexpensive molle packs made by LA police gear if you really want something with a bunch of molle on it, but aren't sure if you want to drop a ton of money for it. They also make a chest pouch attachment for their Atlas line of backpacks, but you'd have to be ok with wearing a chest pack that looks like tactical manboobs. I have some of their pants and pouches and it's overall good for the price.
If you aren't dead set on modular stuff, I own a mystery ranch scree and am very fond of that pack, though I'm not sure I'd personally do multi day stuff with it like you're looking for, but you could look at their stuff.

They’re good for being a single pocket so that you aren’t wasting time rummaging through a shitzillion zippers trying to find something specific, nothing gets lost. Provided you find one you can fit everything in it’s definitely the way to go; I own a 45 from Arcteryx and hopefully it’ll last me a good while

Sounds like a fucking pain in the ass, I use my hpg chest rig for this exact purpose. Couldn't be fucked disassembling my pack for it
I stopped putting shit on my pack belt for this reason, who has time to take it off. If the belt was quick release somehow it might be viable but you'd have to remove everything to unthread it, imo you're better off with a secondary bag, maybe with a bag as small as you're interested in a separate belt kit or fanny pack helikon foxtrot type thing would work, but I've found it prefer a chest rig
Tldr the last thing you want to do when you're actually out is play with molle and shit especially if you got cold hands. The less fucking around with it the better

Nothing is 'wrong' with it so to say,, if not overpriced (even second-hand) and leaving you feeling slightly underwhelmed - though most of that price stems from a made-in-europe product yada yada yada. My only gripes with the M model are that the elasticated side pouches are basically null. There's no stretch in it when the bag is loaded. Moreover and side molle pouches get in the way and make them redundant. My personal issue is that there's no room to play - even if limiting yourself can be a good thing. It's narrow so any winter sleep kit kills this system if you're looking to pack it inside (I take public transport to the forest so I prefer to not leave things on the outside if I can).
>Inside the main compartment in that picture is my DD Jura 2 uncompressed, a thermarest, bugnet, basha, possibles/tools pouch, and my axe. That leaves minimal room for a bladder and food pouch on top. Side pouches are cook kit and med/admin.

Wondering if sizing up would have been the sensible thing, but then again I already have army PLCE pouches so just opted for a sabre. How do you find it mate?

Have you tried taking your sleep system out of the stuff sack and jamming it down in there? I find I prefer that.
Anyway the sabre 45 is great. With the side pouches on its about as big as you'd ever need, even in winter. Haven't really found myself needing to put much on the outside, aside from maybe a bulky foam mat.
I do the same thing anon, public transport to the woods. So yeah I've tried to move away from too many dangly molle pouches and shit. Snags on train arm rests as well as branches inna woods. Fuck it

Wisport Racoon 45L is pretty noice, I only got to take it out a few times this year. I bought an old Norwegian Army Ruck earlier in the year, it fucking reeks of mold though, not sure if I'll ever use it for anything other than storing old camping shit I dont use anymore.

This is what I'm using right now for daytripping but there's a tear on one of the zippers that prevents it from working and the inner pockets are shredded. I'm looking to upgrade, I'd like a pack with a hip belt and some amount of velcro for patches but most of the "tactical" and "assault" bags don't seem very ergonomic and are very blocky. Any suggestions or should I just get an osprey?

I used a $50 50L walmart bag for the better part of two years now, I just sprung for the Osprey Atmos AG 65 after doing some research. Anyone have any first hand experiences with it? I'm pretty excited since it's a HUGE upgrade from my shitty Ozark trail pack.

As you've already noted, tactical themed packs tend to put ergonomics and comfort second, and a hipbelt on a daypack sized bag of that nature seems pretty rare. If that's what you're really wanting, I can only think of a few off the top of my head, but they are in the pricier range of packs. The Direct Action ghost mentioned earlier in the thread has a detachable padded belt on a 27L main pack and a small velcro field. I think DA also makes a bigger version of their dragon egg pack with a belt now too. Sadly they raised their prices (in the US atleast) and are kinda overpriced imo, though they are decently comfortable. Vanquest has some packs, i think their ibex packs have waist belts, some velcro for patches, and some molle compatible webbing. They are again, fairly pricey though, but ive heard they are generally liked. 5.11 has a 40L pack called the Amp72. Might be a bit big for what you're looking for, but it has a waist belt and velcro. I have one i bought on sale that i mainly use for travel, but it's not bad as far as comfort goes. Hill people gear might have something that would work for you, though they are the priciest on this list. They sell packs that are compatible with their waist belt system and have addon accessories that attach to the bag, one of those might have some velcro. Other than that? Mystery ranch might have something, maybe in their military line of stuff? Though that line of stuff is very pricey too. Other than those, maybe eberlestock or savotta might have something like that, but i haven't seen much of their stuff.

I can't think of any particularly cheap options with a waist belt and velcro and are daypack sized. Closest i can think of is LA police gears atlas 72hr, but it's a big fucking pack, i think it claims to be roughly 65L+ or something, but it's sub $100. Dunno how much those features are worth to you. Otherwise, sure go for osprey or maybe mystery ranch's consumer line of stuff or something.

I ordered one, amazon lost it for a while and sent another. Both were delivered the same day so I paid for one but have one for my non-existent girlfriend. Pretty good pack so far though, haven't taken it on a hump but it keeps everything nicely.

Same anon you responded to again. I happen to have a mystery ranch scree and figured I'd throw out that it's a great pack imo. My only nitpicks with it are the not so great airflow between the back, and that i sometimes wish it had more organization. Otherwise it's lightweight, very comfortable minus the airflow, and feels well made. I'm also a lot more fond of the trizip design than i thought I'd be. Definitely a good option to consider.

Yes mate the 3x3 is my main tarp (pic rel). Solid bit of kit which I initially got for my hammock setup but I use it more standalone. Don't know what the alternatives are since I haven't had to look since owning this but it will do you right. +1 for the coyote brown one.

That DD bag next to it is one of their waterproof stuff sacks holding my basha. It fits the 3x3 too although I think the original stuff sack might also be just as waterproof. These sit on the outside of the pack better due to the longer shape though.

Dragon egg owner here, EDC for work 3+ years. Direct Action seem to make pretty decent packs. The molle is a faff though (even more than usual) and the hip belt is redundant unless you're running with it. Pretty good as a day pack especially with the bottom external-carry straps. Worth its weight but probably could have done with something less expensive.

Well, I guess if this is true, and all your regular backpacks break down during hiking use, it might be worthwhile. I haven't had an issue using random backpacks for dayhikes however. I feel unless I got absolute $5 chinkshit backpacks, or stuffed my packs full of rocks and walked through shrubs, they would hold up fairly well.

Also, my understanding of the sternum strap on the savotta s is that it isn't intended to provide support but moreso keep the shoulder straps from spreading apart.

That largely depends in the gear you have. You might consider dropping any extra gear or rethinking gear make room for more food. Water shouldn't be a factor assuming you have filtration and water sources. I can't pull off a winter camp in it but I just did a 2 night out of a 35L with room to spare. That said a 50 to 65L pack is pretty normal do-all size, but keep in mind most packs are still a 30 40L main compartment.

If you ask this board it will either be go ul or try on many backpacks at a store and get one that fits you well and can fit what you need.
Lashing stuff to the outside of your pack has its place, ice axes, skies, snowshoes, hunting stuff, etc can all be lashed to your pack, but unless thats your plan going into things you need to clearly decide on needs and wants as outdoor stuff can quickly become expensive with fancy things you may never even use.

I am s/k/out/ and my answer is PALS is good for pouches you already have that hold efficiently and stuff that would otherwise be awkward in the pack. I have my cook kit in a cylinder pouch on the side of my pack. Works well.
What you don't do is see a pack with PALS and consider it 'a base pack that you need to complete' and turn into some ALICE meme
the point of PALS on hiking packs is actually, unironically, for the modular part. Don't need an IFAK because is day hike in safe place? Take it off, replace with small basic medical ziplock. Switch the 3L bladder for 1 or 2 canteens.

I bought one of the 20 dollar czech military backpacks. It's a hunk of shit but I kind of like it. I don't know what they were thinking designing this thing. It has no external pockets and the only area to attach shit is on the back straps which aren't even directly attached.

Well for one the shoulder straps are detachable. At the top they connect via these pinch clips and at the bottom it's just this cheesy slide slide on type clip, so if you rest the backpack down the bottom clips might fall out and you have to reconnect it. The straps are also pretty thin and dig into your shoulders. I did 7 miles with it and had a small bruise from where it was digging in. There's no external pockets and the only way to attach stuff to the back is on D rings which are on the inside of the strap facing your back, so they are essentially useless. There is some lashing at the top I guess you could attach something to with rope, but it's overall just not a very well designed backpack.

My Yugoslavian and East German packs are like that too. It's such a dumb design; with no method of buttoning on or securing the bottom strap. Like they assume you are going to have three slings for your rifle, canteen, and map pouch on top of it to prevent it from moving.

Looks almost identical to a Splav Raid 45/60L, side packs and all. TOGR did a review on it and you might be able to find it or something else similar online with more reviews/cheaper. No idea about the Deos personally.

My understanding was that the whole point of that design is that if you come under fire and need to hit the deck, it all comes apart as you move so you make a lower silhouette. In that situation you don't want a big fuck off backpack jutting out giving away your position, so it's important that you can shed the thing as quickly as possible.

All the rest of your little story could easily be avoided by just making sure it's actually closed and things are attached properly.
This model served every Central European army pretty well from pre-WW1 until the end of the Cold War, so it can't be that impractical.

I personally like mine by I got mine for 64$ and even that was pretty middle of the road as far as pricing goes. I've done plenty of trips with it and my only complaint is I want something a little lighter. Other than that for 64 liters and something that won't tear with an external frame and is cheap it isn't a bad choice. This is the new ALICE pack and you can throw what ever molle you want on the back or on the belt which is good for putting a canteen and has a place to put a camel pack that you can buy cheap and put on the back.

Also the quick release straps is pretty great for taking the pack off quickly after a long day of hiking.

But be aware this is a duffle bag that they made a frame for

Yeah sure I go to Walmart and even the bright orange packs are molle now. Its now the standard way to attach things to backpacks and gear. even though its stupid to put it on every surface of the backpack, I wouldn't mind my lightweight pack to have some amount of molle on the sides just to attach something if I wanted to.

I have one of these, it's pretty lovable but in a motherly way.
The rigging isn't really a plus but if needed you can pack fabric on your shoulders under the straps to reduce the character building (?). The adjustable cover is good, especially for carrying a bedroll.
You can also make your own hip and X pattern rigging by using the straps on the bottom and attaching them to all the different D rings. From what I can tell the yoke is quite literally the M85 issue trouser suspenders, a necessary corner to cut for a cold war satellite.
The loops on top of the cover can accommodate more straps to put things on top, but ofc these don't come with the pack.
The material is proper fucking tough, I can see this surviving a stab from a knife. Also fully waterproof. Heavy though.
Overall it's a charming looking pack. In base form it's not fun to carry but with some ingenuity you can make it a good 3+ day pack. It's like 4chan, an ugly thing that's uncomfortable to use, but with the right filters the faggots go away and it's actually pretty charming.

I like the concept. A dry bag with attachment points for some modules, like a medical pack (EMT, WFR, etc...), communications, or water filtration stuff.
I agree the logo looks goofy as hell. Black isn't a bad color, but it would be nice to see it in some earth tone, and either a subtle or smaller product label.
It would be a good pack for a canoe trip

Depends what I'm doing, that pack is pretty much dedicated to dog adventures though. Pack itself has 1.5L water bladder, two 3L bottles, chem lights, S-Biner, battery operated stick light, dookie bags, spare leashes (50 ft and 6 ft) and collar, collapsing dog water/food bowls, multitool, human first aid kit, Dog IFAK/first aid kit, pack rain cover, dog towel. Depending on what we are doing it will have food, treats, extra layers of clothing/packable rain layers, whatever else we can fit and would need.

Fanny pack has headlamp, handheld flashlight, dog treats, spare batteries and room for additional stuff like keys, phone, wallet, spare magazine for handgun, etc.

On a somewhat related note, Osprey's LT bladders come with a really cool magnetic mouthpiece coupling system. Works really friggin' well tbqh and is pretty clever. Can be positioned anywhere that has a strap that will fit.

What should I buy? I want to travel somewhat, and I need to carry around a decent amount of tech because I work remotely.

Forgot to say, pic related is a laptop bag I bought, I stuffed all the tech stuff in it, and it does fit.
It's much less full than it seems. It's only bulging because of the mouse.
I'm thinking of stuffing this into a bigger backpack (and packing mouse separately) because it has particular shock protection in it for the laptop.

Haven't decided where to go but good question. That's a good thing. But you still need multiple changes of clothes if you are planning on washing them.

I've been using it daily for my work in forestry for a few years now, it's pretty practical but the waist belt is made for midgets, especially when worn with the pack itself.

Go for it though, I haven't been disapointed. My favourite thing about it is that I can tick my helmet or tools between the two compartements fast and easy without needing to repak all my things.
In retrospect I would've taken the shadow grey variant over the olive one, but that's just optics

Currently my biggest issue is the sleeping bag. its absolutley huge and even a compression sack doesnt help much. i'm now looking at down sleeping bags but they're not exactly cheap. if i can get that volume down, 60L should be plenty of space for anything I need, including lightening the load considerably. I'm really liking how well this thing folds down, right now I have it packed to maybe a third to half the maximum volume but the whole thing can be tightened down so nothing is loose or sliding around inside. You do have to spend a while doing strap management and tidying everything up after changing the volume, but there's tons of places to tuck them away and the straps even have little hooks on the ends so they don't come loose.
I thought it was just plain fabric and got a rain covering for it, but the whole thing actually has a nice inner lining that looks like it should keep at least light rain out fine.

I have a source bladder- my recommendation, before you go /out/ with a pack of good stuff:
is to fill up the bladder, put it in your pack
and the do things like lay it down on its side or flat
and see if there is any leaking
in my experience Source may leak from the top corners due to how the flap is folded (but that might just be mine- I have only had one!)

I've been swinging it around and haven't found any leaking from the flap yet, but it does like to leak a little bit where the mouthpiece connects to the tube. Not a big issue since it just drips on my shirt a little and it's already soaked with sweat anyway, but I'll see if I can find something to wrap around it to provide a better seal there.

Looks like a decent pack for the money. My only concern going in would be the single-layer stitching on the seams/ends. I've typically had kit with single-layer start shredding there after years of heavy loads and weathering. If you're ballin' on a budget it seems like a very good consideration.

Yeah, fully loaded it looks more like this (don't mind the shitty packing, I just stuffed it full of jackets to take a pic lmao). It's super lightweight and compact when not filled because it has almost no bullshit in it, there's one small zippered pocket just above the bladder pouch on the inside but no fancy compartments or padding or shit like that. If you want to keep things organized you'll have to provide some bags or whatever you prefer yourself, but I prefer that over having a million different pockets because they always end up being the wrong size for the stuff I'm actually packing and add weight even when you're not using them.

Also as far as durability goes I think this is the best built piece of gear I've ever had, even if I was going at it with a pair of shears it would put up a fight. The one zipper it has is hilariously overbuilt for a pocket that's unlikely to get overpacked very much, and the lack of zippers on the main closer eliminates a major failure point of shitty packs. I'm always a bit suspicious of plastic buckles because it's hard to tell how shitty they are before they break, but these ones are extremely rigid compared to the ones on my shitty chink packs so for now I'm willing to trust that pekka did a good job on the plastics.

One more little thing I really like is how the sewed the ends of all the straps back to form a little hook so that you can hang it on something instead of having the last bit flapping loose. I assume other good quality packs probably have this trick figured out too, but it's a nice touch that you don't get on chink bags.

I got the S because my current needs are just for everyday shit and day hikes and hauling tools around, so I don't really need the space of the M at the moment. I will probably get an M or L too eventually though, once I have more of a need for it and I'm hopefully less poor.

If anon doesn't know that a single-sided sling pack would be fuck-awful for any sort of overlanding or mountaineering, quite frankly he's going to find a way to fuck his shit up anyway. From a purely physiological standpoint, a sling pack is terrible on the body. Put any sort of weight in one and put serious mileage under your feet, you're looking at back, neck and knee problems in short order. I don't think anon is dumb enough to do that for the most part.

Yeah, but if you aren't even doing overnights, the S would even be fine. The M is one to grow into though, and has a hip belt for if you do graduate to some heavier loads.
I just ordered an S because I find myself using a simple backpack for out stuff way more than a hiking backpack, and I like the simplicity of the design. When my kids are old enough to backpack without driving me insane with complaining, I might go back for the M.

memepack update: I had to go home and pick up a bunch of camping gear I forgot to bring with me to uni for a trip this weekend with my fire ecology class, so here's what it looks like when completely packed to the max. Still super comfy even when it's heavy as fuck, but you do have to use a few braincells when packing since it doesn't come with any frame or padding to babysit you. I've got a ghetto frame/padding setup inside it with the savotta foam pad in the bladder pouch immediately against my back, then a full water bladder behind that, then my laptop behind the bladder if I'm carrying it and then everything else goes behind that so nothing digs into my back.
I also have the extra sling pads on the shoulder strap and a sternum strap attached to it to make things a bit more comfy. I'm not sure the pads are really actually necessary, but they spread the load a bit and I have them so why not. The sternum strap a definitely like having to take some of the weight across my chest and off my shoulders, but I have fucking sissy shoulders so you may or may not find it necessary.
Also featured in this image is a guest appearance by the three young felines that I live to provide for, and watching from just out of frame to the left is their retired mother.

also quick update on my bladder: still no leaks at all from the flap on mine which is very nice, and I took some teflon tape to the connector on the mouthpiece and that seems to have solved the leaking at that joint
my only complaint now is that the dirt cover on the mouthpiece comes off a little too easily, but I can probably find something to put in there to give it a bit more friction so it stays on better

currently I've got my big one full of snaccs so I can eat big and get big while i'm /out/, medium one full of batteries/cables/backup lights/etc, other medium one with medications and things i might need plus toothbrush and shit if I'm travelling, small one with emergency blanket and plastic bags and stuff like that, and a second small one that I've lost somewhere in my room but hopefully I'll find it when I move out at the end of the semester
makes packing and unpacking and finding stuff in pack super easy since you can just toss them around and small stuff doesn't get lost in the bottom, and they are super well constructed which they fucking better be for that price lmao
I just have the regular versions with little hoops at the ends for hanging them up somewhere, but they also make them with attachments on the back so you can hook them to webbing if you want to hang them on the outside of your pack or on a shoulder strap or something
after using them for a while I just wish I had more of them, but I'll have to wait a while before I can work up the courage to throw even fucking more of my shekels at finland for them

It's a pain in the ass, quite frankly. Yeah it's just MOLLE but the belt is particularly challenging due to how stiff the straps are. Overall I think it's just too big to be a sensible daypack.

I have the following Savotta packs:
202 - urban day pack (desu this is probably my favorite)
339 - ultra LARP 2-4 day
S - day hikes
M - winter hikes and 1-2 days
L - 2-5 days

YMMV, and I do have some L pouches to attach as needed.
