Cringe, LARP, or based? I'm wondering because it's going to start to get cold here pretty quick I was wondering if anybody had experience with these. For down hill shin splints or just for warmth. Thanks

Those are full calf puttees, they are about three times the length of ankle puttees. I think they are nice, they certainly stop any wind from entering between your boot and pant; but that's if you are in a location that warrants extra wind protection.
Wouldn't use for shin splint protection, you are better served understanding how to stretch beforehand to prevent it.

Afaik, you need woollen trousers to pair them with, otherwise puttees just slide down.

If you're interested, just get six feet long woollen scarf, cut it in half, sew a sting to it and roll it around your legs.

There's a reason such things have been in use since forever.

Puttees are extremely good but there's a reason they've been replaced by gaiters for most applications these days. If you can pick up a cheap milsurp pair like >>2211398 or just make your own you won't regret it though.

I tuck my pants into socks and put gaiters over that, mostly for ticks. These seem like a better version.

Aye the ones I got are Australian, in new condition, and are from 1943
they are comfy
I wouldn't buy new ones, especially at "uh actually wool is expensive now for no reason" prices

Reckon you could just buy old wool blankets from thrift stores and such and cut em into strips to make puttees.

My church runs the thrift store in my town and I've known those gals since I was in diapers so luckily if I'm looking for something I can just tell them and they'll set stuff aside for me.
But you're right, they 100% take what they want for themselves before it goes on the floor for the rest of the world to see. Not necessarily for profit but just because whatever it is is desirable.
Also lucky for me I inherited a box full of my grandpa's old moving blankets which are all 80%< wool so I probably won't have to worry about tracking down wool ever again
