Unless it’s a really simple follow a ridge to the top type walk, you want to be competent at map n compass nav before setting out.
Depending on the topography and geology, there’s going to be little to no water. Carry enough, or as we do here, walk down a gully with vegetation a bit and dig. Might taste a bit shit, but should be fine, it is here at least.
Check your weather forecast. You don’t want to be on the tops in bad weather, especially a storm.
Take note of a few landmarks like rock outcrops etc and have an egress plan if weather unexpectedly turns.
Here we have snow poles and/or - horror of horrors - cairns. Make your own if there are none, and knock them over on your way out if people actually rage over them as claimed.
I usually also look for a suitable Plan B camp far enough below the bush line to be reasonably well protected from high winds. Our trees are often a bit fragile so I look for rock overhangs, again, pretty common here.
I’ve had to bail to Plan B a few times here, weather reports are as reliable as reading tea leaves. Usually by the time I’ve packed up my shit in the rain or blizzard I’m thoroughly over it and just walk out if it’s close enough and go home or to a hotel.
Also 2 bedrolls if sleeping on rocks or snow. Foam on bottom, thermarest on top.
Other than that, it’s happy days. Nothing like sleeping under the stars on a mountain top!
Oh also a couple of plastic bags so you can sleep with wet boots in your sleeping bag so they don’t freeze.
