As someone who has never solo camped before, where is a good place to start out?
Is it better to start out somewhere close to home, maybe overnight and seeing how it goes? Learning bushcraft skills here and there?

Unironically you're backyard.
Pack what you'd expect you would need for an overnight, walk around your area for a half day, then return home and set up. Cook and do everything in the yard. No running inside !
LARP as fuck, yeah, but it's a good test run for 'oh shit thats right I cant see at night'

I like to test new gear in the backyard before I go /out/
things like stoves or new tents, just to make sure they work how I plan to use them

This. I camped miles out in the wilderness my first time, and while I was fine, it was a mistake. None of my gear was correct, but at least I got some experience. Just make sure you know what you're doing before going /out/, and go at your own pace. It's not a race to see how hardcore you can be. That will come in time. Learn your wildlife and their behavior, gain as much knowledge as you can, and make sure someone knows where you'll be when you go camping, no matter how experienced you are. Eventually if you're like me, you'll start feeling more comfortable miles /out/ in the woods than in your own bed.

short answer: it's harder than other seasons
long answer: depends where you live
could go from needing to wear a bit more/heavier bag from clothes to having to strap snow shoes and worry more about keeping a fire going
No harm in doing a campsite when you drive to it and just meme about and go for a day hike

This is good advice and desu even if you don't end up going full /out/ going on a lengthy hike once a month or so is good for you mentally and physically. You don't need to buy a ton of gear to go on many wonderful day hikes and enjoy the outdoors.
