I'm going hunting next week, and I want to make sure my knives are good and sharp.
I'm currently using a basic Idahone rod sharpener (pic related) and I'm wondering if there are any sharpeners on the market that are better.

Suggestions for great hunting knives also welcome.

Spyderco SharpMaker. I can shave with my Delica easily even after cutting shit up at work. It's usually capable enough to cut through a phone book with no issues. Best investment I ever made for my blades.

What sharpener is that? The only clamp one I know of right now is the edge pro apex and I've been looking for something cheaper.

It's more precise than a Lansky, not to mention much easier to use, more convenient, and incredibly fast considering you use two stones at once, one in each hand.

It's of course much more expensive than a Lansky >>221958 mostly because they come with two stones of each quality, it's about $280 for the cheapest one, and then I've heard lately that the quality of their stones leaves to be desired, some are slightly slanted.

I got the base model. I needed to spend 220 bucks on the finer stones. so I have 550 dollars wrapped up in in it. I sharpened all the knives in the house the first day. the only problems I have are my Becker BK2. it's so thick it throws the angles off and I have to use a angle square. also my spyderco tasman salt the hawk bill is impossible to sharpen with it.

The lanskey is one of the best cheap options and the edge pro apex is one of the more flexible of the higher end sharpeners. I know a lot of people who are satisfied with the smiths pocket pal for touch ups in the field and general use.

Be extra careful of the point of your knife when you use your croc sticks, if you drag it off the rod it kind of rounds it over. If you like that type of sharpening guide, look at the spyderco sharpmaker, it is pretty versatile and not too expensive

I use a worksharp, ended up getting it because I had a ton of old knives that lost an edge and didnt want to sit there with whet stones. Works pretty good.

I just use a cheap stone, coarse on one side, finer on the other. Usually sharpen dry.

I get good edges, but nothing I can shave with.

Should I upgrade/look for another solution?!

It was about $70 for the whole thing. belts are $10 for 6 replacements. As for how long they last, I've sharpened about 12 different knives so far without needing to replace them, so cant say for sure how long they will be there

You don't really need to be able to shave your face with a knife but it aught to be able to take a few hairs of your arm and cleanly slice paper.

Look at the lansky sharpening guide its about $30 is good enough for most jobs
