protip: inflatable boats are absolutely miserable if there's any wind at all. a boat like your pic is borderline unusable if there's more than a slight breeze over the water. inflatable boats that are relatively usable (actual kayak types) are very large to pack. the more the inflatable resembles a real kayak (semi/rigid keel, good length:width ratio) the better it will perform as a boat and the more miserable it will be to carry.

they are not worth using unless you either a) have absolute certainty of the conditions on the water b) have a powered tow back to where you launched from c) the body of water is small enough that walking back from the other end of the lake isn't a big deal.

It’s mad out of polyurethane-coated synthetic fabric so it’s really durable. They are much harder to paddle than your typical kayak if there’s any wind at all or it’s choppy. They’re cool though. I’ve wanted to make my own and then hike up a river and paddle back down it.

Most of the lakes around here that have no motor laws specifically exempt small electrics. It's more about stopping wakes and noise than anything to do with the propeller or something.

decathlon has some good inflatable kayaks, that are pretty durable, coated with thick polyester layer, and can take a beating, but they are all in 12 to 20kg range and not very backpackable, probably size of 80-100l pack.

My canoe weighs 40 lbs and it's a 17 foot two man that can carry a month's worth of gear.

The 13 foot 1 man kevlars are as light as 28 lbs, and would carry a dog just fine.

If you go for a UL baseweight, you can get a canoe+paddle+life vest+base weight for far less than an army ruck, and then you can basically go anywhere that isn't so technical as to demand scrambling on all 4s.

Consider those inflatable kayaks too. They're probably a bit smaller and easier to carry around. Intex makes some nice looking ones but I've never used one.

I have an have used the Intex explorer quite a bit and I still cringe everytime I scrape on rocks, Intex is vynil an way more puncturable then his pack raft Wich I assume is PVC, still bang for the buck wise Intex is quite impressive

inflatable hull designs can be just packed away for winter without the need for storing the footprint of an entire boat + trailer. there are many smaller inflatable catamarans that can fit into just bags. Also you can transport them on the roof of a van so you don't need a trailer etc. (without sails or housing constructed, just the base inflatable and deck). You get more people / equipment onto a catamaran and they act as more of stable deck platform than a monohull.

The rudder application is a bit of a misconception.
All they’re really good for is helping track straight in a crosswind, fuck all use for actual turning - you literally won’t even notice it.
6cm is going to do less than fuck all.
Stability is not related to rudder.

I used a challenger last year, and it kinda sucked, but it got me on the water. Not bad for a single season, and cheaper than renting if you go more than three or four times. Upgraded to a PN paddleboard earlier this year.

YES!!!! can't beat them for a nice ride back after trekking up river. You can fish if you drag lines but careful with the hooks. Best and most compact camping seat lounger / kayak I ever got, it can act as a rain shelter too. Why hasn't /out taken the air couch pill yet? too woke to float?

I can't think of a more portable emergency boat anon, there are 16lb mini kayaks, but these things are so cheap and versatile, you can use them as a couch, rain shelter, bed and boat. show me something else that does that for the size and weight. If you lean way back at the start you can ski behind a boat on one.

We are talking about things which can make expeditions work. Floating equipment to and from places can be done many ways. You can't always get boats into places you need to if they need transporting over land etc. These lightweight options are a good design solution in many cases.

I used an intex 3 for bear hunting but I literally back it from the truck 300 yards to the tru k to cross a river and then started packing from there

If you want to go inflatable with luggage or for several days I highly recommend investing 1000$ into something sturdy like

SOAR (USA)
Grabner (Austria)
Gumotex (Czech Republic)

or what ever is your local comparable boat. They start at 500$ in good used shape.
Also get yourself a used para glider backpack if the boat doesn't come with a good rucksack because it makes day and night to carry heavy weight in a good or bad bag.

The $300 new boats are toys. They can work. But the above $1000 boats you use a lifetime.

I caped and quartered it and made a few trips honestly that was the easy part. Hiking up and down all of that elevation was the real problem. I might actually have been able to get the bear across in one piece but I never could have hiked it out of there like that.

Not that anon, but I've always been more interested in these folding kayaks than the inflatables. It's just more of what a kayak should be than the inflatables, which are like pool toys masquerading as kayaks. That's my warped view on them anyway. Trad greenland kayaks are skin on frame and something about the folding boats evokes that aesthetic, if not the strength.
