You start with a bit of the roll above your toes, go over the toes, all the back to the heel, and then you start the spiral wrapping from the inside side of your foot. It's really tricky to get right at first, because you'll probably either go too loose or too tight. Lots of try at home when you first attempt it - it can be very bad if you do it too tight and cause muscular pain.
The seamstress lady cuts and sows together 8cm wide strips. She does layers of 60% wool / 40 % cotton mix. It's certainly not very stretchy but it's also not hard like a 100% standard wool blanket.
I use two per foot or they would be too long and hard to wash/dry properly.
For boots it depends on the season..? In summer (standard ankle height hiking boots from x manufacturer) i am not wearing my cold weather boots (impermeable leather, tall, a little higher than halfway to knee) that are also not my snow boots (wide, flat soles - very bulky).
The whole reason i use them is because of the foot size difference. One boot always too loose and double / triple socks really doesn't work well (maybe if you use many pairs of thinner socks).
It's not convenient, it's expensive - but i really don't like accepting irritating things that can be fixed.
I wanted custom boots before I went with this solution but that was too expensive for my Yuropoor ass. Each pair of my wraps cost 35€ , but custom boots would be over 800 a pair for simple summer pair, and over 1200 for winter stuff. I don't even make that in a month.
