Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Captain Black or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $25.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.

replying to the previous thread, yes i have made my own pipe, made my own corncob from some corn I grew in my garden and dried, picked it hollow with a stick or something and drilled a hole in the side with a basic drill. the stem was the hard part: used a wood window dowell, tried to burn through it with a piece of wire I heated until glowing, ultimately resorted to using a very long drill bit. also made a few wood pipes after that similar to what you posted but none were very good

in clay (or meerschaum in the case of saxaphone pipes) they do help dry the smoke as the clay and meerschaum (which is actually a type of clay) are extremely porous and suck up moisture like a sponge. but vulcanite and lucite are not porous, will not suck up moisture from the smoke, and are thermal insulators to boot.
they're also clumsy as fuck. they're ok for when you're reading a book and can rest the bowl on your chair or table but that's about it. stanwell makes a churchwarden that comes with both long and short stems, invariably they get smoked once or twice with the long stem before getting a permanent switch to the short stem.

The local pipe shop has a basket of churchwarden pipes with the name Rigoletto stamped on them, presumably ones that didn't pass visual inspection as a few of them have minor scuffs and the like. I can't seem to find any real information on the manufacturer online and none of the sites I've checked look like they carry new Rigoletto churchwardens.

They have all of the gurgling and heat issues of a metal pipe, with all of the cleaning issues of a briar. The mouthpiece not being removable on mine didn’t help either.
If you’re in a place with cold, wet winters like the PNW or northern England, the super humid weather can warp a wooden pipe. A Falcon won’t warp, that’s what makes it great. If you don’t have those problems, it’s a solution without a problem at that point.

I’ve got pipes that are over 100 years old and are still fine. Just keep them fairly clean and don’t let the cake build up too much, and they’ll stay good for a LONG time.

They’ll attract moths which pollinate them and they’ll lay their eggs on them too. Manduca sexta hornworms can devastate tobacco but are also one of their main pollinators.
After tobacco is pollinated they’ll create about 20-30 seed pods with around 300 seeds in each one. Though N. rustica isn’t normally grown for its yields or flavor so your chances of a plant are around 12-20% germination rate. After seed pods are made they will die since tobacco is not a perennial plant, and depends on its seeds to create the next generation.

Many tribes seem to have made many landrace strains of nicotiana rustica and other species. Besides Choctaw perique plants, and alaskan quadrivalis strains, it seems like every tribe made their own special breed of nicotiana rustica suited to their taste and enviroment.
Im trying to decide right now as to whether i should grow mohawk rustica plants, aztec rusticas, hopi rusticas... or one of the many more choices

Anyone got a recommendation for a pipe brand if I have like 300€ to blow? I found a Caminetto I like who used to be known for smoking dry and cool. However then I read up on it and heard the company broke apart in the 80s so I have literally 0 idea about their quality these days. I'm open for other brands and countries for sure, no preference, only looking for a cool and dry smoke as I tend to run my pipes fairly hot even when smoking slow as fuck.

Best way to light is with a butane lighter, though purists tend to prefer matches that have burnt for at least a second to loss the phosphorous taste, and further still people who will swear by cedar spliffs. It really comes down to how fancy do you fancy your smoke. Cheap tobacco was how I started so I could know what flavor profiles I like. There’s also some good suggestions in this thread so far, and most tins are only $10-15 online.

Some snuffs will clog you up easier than others. If we're talking schmalzers/mentholated, some folks just generally have a tough time with those clogging the airways. If we're talking an SP or a scotch snuff, you're sniffing waaaaaaay too hard then. Act like you're smelling flowers, only ever so lightly. Coarser snuffs are more forgiving than fine. Just experiment and see what makes your nose less clogged/less throat drip. Hope that helps! What are you sniffing, by the way?
